High schoolers’ reading, math scores drop to lowest level in decades

Obviously the solution is to funnel more taxpayer dollars to the teachers' unions.
Countries with high teacher unionization rates smoke the US on outcomes.

Canada is the most educated country in the world and our teachers are unionized.

I bet if you filtered out schools in poor neighborhoods, the students' scores would be far higher. Education in the US is horribly skewed towards the wealthy.

Yep, and to allow ‘social promotion’ to ensure every child gets advanced to the next grade level annually and graduates (with their participation trophy?), regardless of their academic achievement. ;)
Our home school is cutting specials next year because not enough money for teachers so that’s awesome. Kids don’t get a participation trophies. IEPs are what they are. The disabled kids deserve an education too. From what I see the worst kids drop out and then the parents abuse the voucher system.

Ive taught in high schools and colleges. The left and right both have fingerprints on this problem.

In my community there is a slow exodus from private schools to public schools. Any system where parents are the customers inevitably leads to grade inflation, which means your kids high GPA could become worth less. Often "school choice" can just mean going where the grade inflation is the highest or just going to a school with fewer fights and gang activity. Its not a solution.

On the other hand, we give out way too many social promotions. And a lot of this happens (people may not like me saying this) because schools don't want to get in trouble if certain groups of people fail grades more than others. In a country with different subcultures not all groups will do equally well in school. The sooner we accept that the better off we'll be.

In short...no political party addresses the problem that learning is a team effort with parents, teachers, and kids and parents are definitely the weak link in most cases.

Hmm…

While exact data for high school graduates specifically can vary, the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) data for 2019 showed that 37% of twelfth graders performed at or above the NAEP Proficient level in reading, indicating a significant percentage, or approximately 63%, did not achieve this standard.

What the data means:

  • Proficient Level: Students at this level can understand complex information in texts.
  • Basic Level: Students at this level can understand essential information and key ideas in texts.
  • Below Basic: Students at this level likely struggle with understanding even basic information in texts, making it difficult to comprehend stories or implied information.

I’m mostly familiar with local k-5. Kids get the grades they earn. The teachers don’t pass kids out of pity. IEPs are however different.

So naturally, we must disband the Dept. of Education & withhold funding from schools.

High schoolers’ reading and math scores dropped to the lowest level in decades, along with declines in science scores from eighth graders, according to the National Assessment of Education Progress (NAEP), the gold standard exam for comparing student achievement over the years.

The results on what is commonly known as the Nation’s Report Card are the first for these groups since before the COVID-19 pandemic.

You’ve got to be careful with these clickbait headlines. They’re designed for “simple,” reactionary minds with little grasp of data. The article doesn’t show the data, nor how it was collected.

Let’s say State C doubles its math scores, while State T insists on replacing science and biology with creationist “Science.” (I think I just vomited in my mouth a little.) Critical thinking goes out the window, math and science scores drop by three points, and suddenly the overall average of States C and T looks worse. Cue some blockheaded conservative shouting, “Look—it’s the Department of Education’s fault! Let’s disband them!”

Overall, student scores have risen—except during the COVID years, which we’ve largely recovered from. Yes, the U.S. still trails other first-world nations (thanks to the American ethos where 80% believe in angels), but there has been genuine progress. Of course, much of that went straight down the toilet under Trump and his esteemed Secretary of Education, a woman who could barely spell or string together coherent thoughts. Such is the nature of American culture.

Teachers need to be better paid and need to have stronger unions. This will keep the creeps in red state governments from doing any damage.

The Chicago Teachers Union is sure strong.

They own the Chicago mayor's office & wanted a bank-busting $50 billion in contractual demands (some of which included political agenda shit, and later claimed to be "taken out of contrext") some months back.

And their President? A race-baiting hypocrite.
She screams about "racist school choice", yet sends her kid to a private school.

If Illinois was a red state, they would have a point. Although, I do see your point too.

Have educational results improved or gotten worse since the DoE was created?

It'll be harder to tell in the future in at least Illinois, since they lowered standards to make sure the numbers seemed "better".

Governor Prickster took a page out of the Donald Trump handbook in running the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
