Milk’s service was honorable. The military’s policy regarding gays was dishonorable. His service was not "honorable" because he received an "OTHER than honorable discharge."
Well, for one thing look how this country has prospered since TACO changed the name of the Gulf of Mexico. How does renaming an oil supply ship improve morale?
Take me through the steps.
They didn't recognize gay pride month? It's a military, why would it? If I walk down main street, I bet 99% of the stores don't do that.No recognition of women's roles in the military, no acknowledgement of gays and will not recognize Gay Pride Month this June. Senator Joseph McCarthy are you enjoying this?!
If it ain't broken, don't fix it.Good for you.
Now, go back and fix the rest.
Goodie for you! Now draft the store employees when we go to war. With women and gays no longer recognized would you vote the same for blacks, Hispanics and Asians??They didn't recognize gay pride month? It's a military, why would it? But most cities, even very red state OKC holds at least a pride parade. Most cities have black history events. Culture doesn't end when we put on our uniform and take the oath. 'Merica is so unique because of all the cultures we incorporate....They didn't recognize gay pride month? It's a military, why would it? Why should anyone serving onboard USNS HARVEY MILK be embarrassed or ashamed?… you're a sailor in the Navy and you have to tell people that that's the name of your ship?
Only to insecure homophobes. Not a good mix.
The Navy doesn’t have any dance halls, and sure as shit never had any bath houses.I'm sure there are other government items that would be better suited to that name. Maybe a dance hall or bath house or something.
What “obvious passive aggressive aspect”?That's not even considering the obvious passive aggressive aspect off it.
Vote the same? What vote are you talking about?Goodie for you! Now draft the store employees when we go to war. With women and gays no longer recognized would you vote the same for blacks, Hispanics and Asians??
You can have a gay month if you want. No reason for the military to recognize a group because of who the like to have sex with. It's kind of ridiculous. But most cities, even very red state OKC holds at least a pride parade. Most cities have black history events. Culture doesn't end when we put on our uniform and take the oath. 'Merica is so unique because of all the cultures we incorporate....
Well, maybe there just isn't a good place to use it then. The Navy doesn’t have any dance halls, and sure as shit never had any bath houses.
Oh, please. Gee, it's just a regular naming of ship. What, sailors might not like it? Like it's a slap in the face? We had no idea! I guess no pink uniforms then! What “obvious passive aggressive aspect”?
“Use” what?Well, maybe there just isn't a good place to use it then.
A lot of repressed feelings going on here ^.Oh, please. Gee, it's just a regular naming of ship. What, sailors might not like it? Like it's a slap in the face? We had no idea! I guess no pink uniforms then!
How so? Taking a bullet?
He probably wants to rename it the “Gin and Tonic.”![]()

While I am not a huge fan of Harvey Milk, this is pretty much just sour grapes and vindictive.
Hegseth gave some bull shit about reestablishing a warrior culture.
Actually, just bigotry is all that it is.
Obviously, we should also strip Jackie Robinson’s name from any street sign or other public property. Why would being the first of your persecuted group to attain recognition and suffer for it entitle you to any honor? To be fair, what did Harvey Milk do that should have given him the honor of having a Navy ship named after him? His highest achievement was getting elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. He was actually more known for his murder giving Diane Feinstein notoriety that ultimate led to her Senate career.
The military dishonored itself by discharging him. Things have gotten better and more honorable since. You are the one asserting it is a waste of money. I have pointed out both why I think the action was taken, and why it is a valid one IMO.
Out of curiosity, have you served in any branch of the U.S. Military? I ask because your posts don't give the impression that you have because it's clear you have no idea about the importance of individual pride, esprit de corps, and high morale among the services.
His service was not "honorable" because he received an "OTHER than honorable discharge." Do try to pay attention.![]()
He was a pioneer of sorts for a persecuted group. Much like Jackie Robinson, he helped make our nation better. The Navy historically has named ships to honor individuals who have made significant contributions to the nation, the Navy, or maritime history. What did Harvey Milk do to earn this designation over other warriors?
Why was that?Navy ships should be named after sailors who either received the Navy Cross medal, or after sailors who received the Congressional Medal of Honor.
Milk didn't even get an honorable discharge.
The reason to change it is as valid as the reason to name it that in the first place.![]()
