Hegseth intends to rename USNS Harvey Milk

We don't want a "warrior culture". Especially not such a phony one.

The United States is supposed to represent peace and liberty.

This moron should not be able to rename anything beyond his own little toadstool.

Fort Liberty, the former name of the military base in North Carolina, was changed back to Fort Bragg on March 7, 2025. The base was originally named for Confederate General Braxton Bragg. In 2023, it was renamed Fort Liberty as part of an effort to remove Confederate names from military bases. Now, Fort Bragg honors Army Pfc. Roland L. Bragg, a World War II paratrooper, instead of the Confederate general.

Large based are often named after privates? Lol
Just more Republican bs. Clearly a pathetic attempt to justify honoring a traitor

Somewhat off topic, just another example of Republican behavior

While I am not a huge fan of Harvey Milk, this is pretty much just sour grapes and vindictive.

Hegseth gave some bull shit about reestablishing a warrior culture.

:ROFLMAO:

Actually, just bigotry is all that it is.
To be fair, what did Harvey Milk do that should have given him the honor of having a Navy ship named after him? His highest achievement was getting elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. He was actually more known for his murder giving Diane Feinstein notoriety that ultimate led to her Senate career.

Harvey Milk demonstrated more courage, bravery, and personal sacrifice than the weekend Fox "News" host could ever imagine.
Hegseth is simply a messenger for more extremist hatred and fear.
Seems to me he should have much more important and worthwhile things to do. This is an absolutely useless waste of taxpayer money.
He's just another of many trump incompetents, inexperienced and unprepared.

Just one more spiteful petty little bitch appeasing his master 🌮

"Milk, a former Navy lieutenant who served during the Korean War aboard a submarine rescue ship, was forced to resign from service after four years and accept an other than honorable discharge instead of facing a court-martial for being gay – at the time a crime within the military.
A John Lewis-class oiler — a group of ships specifically to be named after prominent civil rights leaders and activists — Harvey Milk has officially been in service since November 2021 when she was christened and launched." link

I guess Harvey Milk needs to become an unperson.

This is similar to the Stalinist Soviet Party erasing people from photographs after death; this is an example of "real" unpeople.

The Stalin-era Soviet Union also provided real-world examples of unpersons in its treatment of Leon Trotsky and other members of the Communist Party who became politically inconvenient. In his 1960 magazine article "Pravda means 'Truth'", reprinted in Expanded Universe, Robert A. Heinlein argued that John Paul Jones and a mysterious May 15, 1960 cosmonaut had also received this treatment.

He served in the navy, which is more than many people with ships named after them.

You don't know his story? Here;

I read that same article before I posted. Are you suggesting that he earned the ship naming honor simply for being the first openly gay man to be elected to public office in California?

Wrong.

"In 1955, he (Milk) resigned from the Navy at the rank of lieutenant, Junior Grade*, forced to accept an "other than honorable" discharge and leave the service rather than be court-martialed because of his homosexuality." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harvey_Milk

*(equivalent to a First Lieutenant in the Army).

Bottom line, he did nothing in military service to deserve a ship of any size be named after him. Nor IMO anything during his subsequent employment and political career.

SecDef Hegseth is simply doing what he has stated, i.e. seeking to make the Military an organization for War Fighters, not social justice warriors.

Why do you feel so bad about veterans who did more for this country than you ever have or will?
I happen to be a veteran and I don't think all veterans should have ships named after them simply for having been a veteran. Only those with special accomplishments.

I can only imagine the jokes told about the sailors assigned to a ship named after a man for no reason other than he was gay.

As a USNS ship, it is manned by civilians.
