Much is made of Zelensky's Jewish heritage when questions about far right influence in Ukraine, as though his being of Jewish descent is a indisputable torpedo that wrecks any notion of the idea.

I have learned that the House Speaker of the Canadian parliament has resigned off the back of the Hunka ovation debacle.

I saw Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau appear before cameras acknowledging how embarrassing it was for Canada and Canadians etc etc.. Quickly reminding everyone of the dangers of Russian disinformation, like as though the Russians should in some way be considered, somehow, responsible for Hunkas standing ovation for his WW2 Nazi collaboration.

I saw a motion being put forward ( though since defeated iirc) that the whole affair be scratched from the parliaments official records archive, Orwells memory hole comes to mind lol If it had gone through I wonder if any subsequent mention of it would have been referred to a " Russian disinformation" and the commenter de funded and de platformed for their treacherous Putinista puppetry.

I also learned that the deputy prime minister had also accused those making accusations that her grand father had taken over the newspaper of a murdered Jewish owner and used it to pump out anti Jewish rhetoric at the time of the Holocaust of being victims of Russian disinformation, before it was established to have been true.

What I have yet to find any evidence of is any apology from Zelensky for his standing ovation and fist air punch in honour of a person who was actively engaged in a military unit that was known to have carried out massacres of Jews and others in the WW2 period.

You would think he would have been the first to jump in front of the cameras with an offer of apology for his actions but I have searched and found nothing of the sort so far at least.

Maybe he has and I have missed it. Thoughts?

My thoughts? That guy must have been a kid when he was conscripted.

Well he should.

We should remember though, that Eastern Europeans don't hate Nazis as much as the victors of WW2 do. The Soviets were pretty terrible too. Eastern Europeans had experience of both.

Zelenski had no idea of the man's background. He has nothing to apologize for.

The president of Ukraine supposedly not knowing anything about his own country‘s history is a downright comical idea.

Zelensky is the one guy who, beyond all doubt, should have known better.

Don't be ridiculous. He would have to know of this particular individual. You just want an excuse to bash him.

The speaker explictly said “a veteran from the Second World War who fought for Ukrainian independence against the Russians and continues to support the troops today even at his age of 98.”

That should have been a dead giveaway. He wasn’t even subtle about it.

What‘s ridiculous is the amount of excuses made for celebrating the SS.

funny, yet the haters think Trump should know everyone he takes a photo with

The Speaker of the Canadian House of Commons, and I imagine Trudeau as well, had no idea Yaroslav Hunker was a Waffen SS veteran, yet they apologised. Should they retract their apologies?

That's no excuse to the Tankies among us.
Zelenskyy should be clairvoyant and a mind reader as well as excellent at English for any reasonable person to doubt why he wasn't fully aware of what he was being involved in.

Absolutely not. The Speaker invited him and should have vetted him. Trudeau as PM owed the country and Ukraine an apology. Zelensky had no part in any of it and had a right to presume the Speaker and the PM had made good choices. They had not and that's on them.

Zelensky also lost family in the Holocaust.

Oh look, another round of apologists pretending the president of Ukraine doesn’t know his own countries’ history.

World War Two is not some obscure conflict.

I eagerly await your usual tantrum when forced to face facts.

1. start with a "whatabout" and stick to it
2. lie about someone else's post repeatedly (in this case, you're lying about my words)
3. speak for them - basically then making up the other person's words and fake position
4. claim you are crying / raging / insert other childish phrase here

and 5. claim to have debunked the position made up for you (see for example invasion in this thread.)

finally 6. repeat ad nauseam with a large dose of "lastworditis."

Perfectly said.

This dumb thread and the crows hanging on to the idea of Zelenskyy being at fault is just Tankies being Tankies.

I've given up reminding them that the Speaker of the house apologised and then resigned - all the fake outrage is simply about trying to push a Russian narrative on what happened.

“Tankie” is an meaningless accusation.

The Speaker doing what he should have done— at a minimum— does not change the fact that the president of Ukraine either supposedly knows nothing about his own country‘s history or actively participated in celebrating an SS thug.

Way to prove me right.....again.

Good observation. I had been thinking about it myself. You remind me of the curious incident of the dog that didn't bark in one of Sir Arthur de Conan Doyle's works, "Silver Blade":

<<<<<<
Gregory (Scotland Yard detective): “Is there any other point to which you would wish to draw my attention?”
Holmes: “To the curious incident of the dog in the night-time.”
Gregory: “The dog did nothing in the night-time.”
Holmes: “That was the curious incident.”
The fact that the dog did not bark when you would expect it to do so while a horse was stolen led Homes to the conclusion that the evildoer was a not a stranger to the dog, but someone the dog recognized and thus would not cause him to bark. <<<<<

I will say Zelensky's is the curious case of the Jew that did not bark. Why is a Jew not incandescent over a "prank" that has him cheering a Waffen SS veteran?

Zelensky is not the only Jewish President in the world. There is also Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Can you imagine the outrage of Israel and Netanyahu if Canada had pulled such a "prank" on him? Israel and Netanyahu would have gone ballistic, and rightfully so.

Why the defeaning silence from Zelensky and Ukraine? Especially given that Zelensky is paraded as proof that Ukraine is not fertile ground for the likes of the Waffen SS. Ukraine claims Nazis in its ranks are a thing of the past, this was an opportunity to demonstrate that by backing Poland in its call to have Waffen SS man Hunka extradited to Poland to sit in the dock.

But there is a method to the madness. Or should I say silence?

Zelensky and Ukraine have good reasons for maintaining silence. The 14th Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS are folk Heroes in Bandera Ukraine. Just this past December 5th 2022 the Supreme Court of Ukraine ruled emblems of the 14th Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS are not Nazi. Can one not infer from that ruling that same Court may also, based on that ruling, veteran Hunka was not Nazi?

Has Zelensky accepted the apology you claim owed to him by the Speaker and Trudeau:)?

Last I looked Zelensky was President of Ukraine last December 5th 2022, a day that must live in infamy, when the Supreme Court of Ukraine ruled emblems of the 14th Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS are not Nazi. Zelensky never protested that outrageous ruling. Go Figure
