H&M Racist

Hmm. So there is nothing wrong with the shirt in itself. I think my son has a shirt that says “crazy monkey” or something like that.

So they needed to hire a model to model the shirt. Hiring a black kid to wear it is racist but wouldn’t it be discrimination if they said black kids need not apply? Reminds me of that ad where a white girl was resting her arm on the head of a younger black girl and people said it was racist. Turned out the two girls were actually siblings.

I remember that. That was so dumb.

the kid's mom can't stop a lot of bad press and a backlash against the company. if she could do that, this thread wouldn't have been posted in the first place. it was an exceptionally poor decision on the part of whoever designed that ad.
What decision? I very much doubt they specifically chose a black model for that item, they’ll have booked a model of the right age (probably among several for the shoot) and got photos of him in a whole range of their clothes. I suspect the shoot was in Scandinavia (given the company and the where the mother is reported to live) so I don’t expect the issue even crossed their minds. It probably didn’t cross the mind of countless other people who will have seen the picture, either other staff of the company or customers on the website.

The only decisions were from the one individual who made the racist connection between the wording on the shirt and the skin colour of the young model and decided to propagate it on social media and a journalist who saw that and decided to get some cheap copy out of it. If they hadn’t made those decisions, I very much doubt anyone else would have noticed or cared and nobody would have been harmed or disadvantaged in the slightest. If anything, all this has achieved is to re-enforce the racist association of black and monkey.

no, it wasn't the fault of those who saw a black kid in a jungle monkey sweatshirt and got offended by it. it was a dumb advertising decision. i doubt that anyone is unaware that this kind of thing is offensive to a significant portion of customers. those who are shouldn't be in advertising, because they can do a lot of damage to a company.

So I'm sitting in Cookout trying to enjoy my lunch, and I see this guy walk by wearing a shirt that says "Boys will be Boys" with a picture of all the characters in Mickey Mouse Clubhouse.

Basically, I'm in a precence of a sexist, if not worse. So I walk up to him like any self respecting person would do and let him know he is a misogynist pig who is perpetuating rape culture.

The look he gave me let me know I did the right thing. Now he was at most 2 years old. So I can't confirm he knew exactly what I was talking about. But he knew he ****ed up somehow.

I'm not convinced it is offensive to a significant portion of customers (again, this was apparently only on the UK site). We don't even know whoever triggered the controversy was actually offended rather than just causing trouble.

Hope you posted a video of a cow being slaughtered on his FB page just to drive home the point that he is a horrible person by even being at Cookout!!!!!

They have good BLT's if you get them early before the bacon sits in the pan until it is shoe leather.

well, apparently, you are incorrect. putting a black child in a jungle monkey hoodie has proved controversial enough that the story went viral. would you want that kind of publicity for your clothing company? i wouldn't. the advertising department or third party advertising company screwed up.
