Gun Control Won't Solve The Problem of Massacre, So What Will?

2012 has been one of the worst years of mass murder in American history. The shooting at the Dark Knight, the murders at the Sikh temple, and now the Conn. shooting have left us all wondering if gun control should be forced upon the public or if we should keep the risk up. Well I can tell you, there will always be a risk. All these shootings would still have happened with the only exception that the guns being used would have been acquired illegally. So what is the solution? There isn't one. But the worst thing we could do is to take guns away from good citizens. If rifles and extended magazines are banned to the public it will only increase crimes to get illegal weaponry and firearms. If your not convinced, look at history. The prohibition created some of America's worst criminals, some who killed more than all of this year's shooting combined. In fact our entire history is based of bad bans. The American revolution was based off fighting taxes and getting weapons unbanned. So even though there may not be a solution to the problem, the best way to stop murders is to keep weaponry out of the hands of the mentally insane and convicted felons. The following years from now are probably still going to have death and misery but as long as we keep firearms in the right hands we will become safe as a country and society.

Do nothing. That'll work...[/sarcasm]

Garbage! Gun control may not totally stop all crimes committed by guns, but will lessen it. Understand?
Look at the numbers. Figures don't lie but liars figure. Why do people need to have assault rifles, tanks, artillery pieces? Are the Iranians, the North Koreans and their terrorist allies coming? The people who drafted the second amendment certainly failed to forsee the type of weaponry we have today.

The people who are against any kind of gun control are the gun industry and the NRA who use the 2nd. amendment as a convenient tool to add some credence to their argument. There will be no real gun control until the public truly becomes fed up with what is happening and the politicians have developed sufficient backbone to stand up against the gun industry and the NRA.

Perhaps there could be real gun control, as in progressive countries, when someone mows down enough people at say, a NRA or gun industry convention?

Chicago has some of the strictest gun control laws in the country. Yet we see more gun crime there than most other cities.

If gun control will not prevent mass murders then we need to find a way to minimize the exposure of our children and citizens. It should not be that hard to provide safe points of entry for schools and other public gathering places. If we can't find a single solution we can find a number of safe guards that will minimize this type of horrible event.

Its not whether they will its whether they can, banning guns completly will open a black market for arms and a new prohibition era. Rather than banning guns, make sure people have a background check, 40% of gun sales in America didnt have a background check last year.

While the tragic loss of life in America is sad at every level it is 100x
less than what our dear earth has lost to tyranical governments across
the globe year in and year out. Over the last 100 years we've suffered
the horrible loss of about 1.2 million people (about 12k a year). Over
that same period of time - governments - have killed well over 100
million unarmed people who couldn't defend themselves. It looks to me
like our founding fathers understood the "real threat" to man very
very well.

Just close the gun sale loop hole, make it so that all weapons purchased and sold must go through a licensed gun shop, no more private sellers. That alone will make a big difference

Gun shows in the United States - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

From 2004 to 2006, ATF conducted surveillance and undercover investigations at 195 gun shows (approximately 2% of all shows). Specific targeting of suspected individuals (77%) resulted in 121 individual arrests and 5,345 firearms seizures. Seventy nine of the 121 ATF operation plans were known suspects previously under investigation.[1]
Additionally, ATF Field Offices report that:
Between 2002 and 2005, more than 400 guns legally purchased at gun shows from licensed dealers in the city of Richmond, Virginia, were later recovered in connection with criminal activity. Bouchard notes that, "These figures do not take into account firearms that may have been sold at Richmond area gun shows by unlicensed sellers, as these transactions are more difficult to track."[3] It is noteworthy that the "in connection with criminal activity" category includes stolen guns later recovered from burglaries, but the report does not specify how many guns in the 400 gun figure cited were not guns used in the commission of a crime, but that were rather the fruits of criminal activity.
The Department of Justice reports, "after reviewing hundreds of trace reports associated with guns used in crime recovered in the New Orleans area and interviewing known gang members and other criminals, ATF Special Agents identified area gun shows as a source used by local gang members and other criminals to obtain guns."[1]
In 2003 and 2004, the San Francisco ATF Field Division conducted six general operations at Reno, Nevada, gun shows to investigate interstate firearms trafficking. During these operations, "agents purchased firearms and identified violations related to "off paper" sales, sales to out-of-state residents, and dealing in firearms without a license." The "ATF seized or purchased 400 firearms before making arrests and executing search warrants, which resulted in the seizure of an additional 600 firearms and the recovery of explosives."[1]
ATF's Columbus Field Division conducted its anti-trafficking operations based on intelligence from Cleveland police that "many of the guns recovered in high-crime areas of the city had been purchased at local gun shows." Subsequent gun show sting operations resulted in the seizure of "5 guns, one indictment, and two pending indictments for felony possession of a firearm." The state of Ohio is one of the top ten source states for recovered guns used in crime.[1]
The ATF's Phoenix Field Division reported that "many gun shows attracted large numbers of gang members from Mexico and California. They often bought large quantities of assault weapons and smuggled them into Mexico or transported them to California."[1] Garen Wintemute, a professor at the University of California at Davis, calls Arizona and Texas a "gunrunner's paradise."[28]
Regarding the trafficking of firearms from the U.S. into Mexico, the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) issued a report in June 2009 which stated: “While it is impossible to know how many firearms are illegally smuggled into Mexico in a given year, about 87 percent of firearms seized by Mexican authorities and traced in the last 5 years originated in the United States, according to data from Department of Justice’s Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). According to U.S. and Mexican government officials, these firearms have been increasingly more powerful and lethal in recent years. Many of these firearms come from gun shops and gun shows in Southwest border states.” [7]

Closing this only impacts legitimate gun owners and does nothing to stop criminals from obtaining guns.
