See I really don't think so because covid isn't lethal to the typical person. I think everyone wearing masks only delays the inevitable because the CDC says covid is going to be with us for years. You can't run from it for years.

I really have never understood all of the focus on the building - especially the extra ornate and ones loaded with bells and whistles. Can you imagine Jesus walking on earth....seeing the homeless and hungry....and then looking up at an ornate cathedral or churches? I think he would wonder if anyone was listening to his word.

That's actually a really good point. But I'm not sure how you avoid it...unless you station police outside of every business, the onus will fall onto the business owner to uphold the regulation. Up here larger retail outlets have security guards enforcing mask requirements, but that's only a half step above civilians, I'm not sure this would have ended differently, and for small businesses the cost of hiring a security guard, even temporarily, might be outside of their budget.

I think my own state and county are doing about the best that can be done.

1. The Governor has issued a statewide mask mandate with certain conditions and exemptions. If people enter a business without a mask, they can be charged with trespassing.

2. A store, such as Walmart, will require customers to wear a mask and have employees trained to deal with people who don't have a mask. They will even go so far as to offer a mask to the customer. But if the customer still refuses, they won't physically prevent them from entering the store. At that point, they'll call the police on the customer for trespassing.

3. My County Sheriff has said he won't use his resources to stop people and issue citations if they aren't wearing a mask, but he will respond to trespass calls.

Now...even with that, a situation can happen if the customer gets stupid and resists the police.

I mean I kinda get how it started....the steeple was the tallest structure around and the bells at the top would carry for miles. The colored glass was, at the time, just how windows were made. But today, especially with megachurches...yeah I don't think the church read its own bible, ya know?

Yeah, that's about what we have in my area at this point...maybe the correct response would be for business owners to call the police and direct their compliant customers to stay away from the trespasser until the police arrive - after all, this is about protecting people, not enforcing some facial fashion requirement. It might also make some of these anti-maskers realize that in pursuit of their own self interest, they are impacting everyone around them in a tangible way - it might make them decide it's worth just putting the damn thing on, if they see that the entire store is impacted by their behavior. It won't deescalate every situation, but certainly some.

Yeah, I mean, I'm willing to wear a mask for as long as it takes, if the alternative is my inadvertently being responsible for the death of even one person. It's really not that big of a deal, and it's amazing what you get used to.

I dunno, maybe it's that I'm a filthy lefty, but I just don't look at making a tiny sacrifice to help save lives as being something I need to think too much about. Helping people was beaten into my head by my Christian conservative grandparents. This costs me nothing, except the five bucks for the mask. :shrug:

Saving lives has never been a goal or priority for the US. Our 1st priority is our 'AAA' international credit rating. Our 2nd priority is controlling the flow of oil. Our bloody history shows that we will expend any number of lives to protect those 2 priorities.
