SSM is the issue that has PO'd the big guy, according to Pat Robertson.
Television evangelist Pat Robertson responded to New York’s decision to legalize same sex marriage by warning Monday that the result would be America’s destruction.

“I think we need to remember the term sodomy came from a town known as Sodom and Sodom was destroyed by God Almighty and the thing that they practiced was homosexual activity and even they tried to rape angels who came down there, so that’s the kind of people they were,” Robertson said. God “sent an angel down there and He said to Lot and his family, ‘get out now because I’m gonna destroy this whole area.’”

Because - of course - we can see by looking at other countries who have long since legalized gay marriage and their subsequent horrid downfalls - smited by god's mighty hand - that god finds it completely unacceptable.

Hah - ****ing - hah.

Well...... the bible actually did say that. Im an ex-Evangelical Christian and Pat isnt making that up. Its in there. Not sure about the angel bit though. Ive heard it before but never looked for it.

Oh yes - the bible.

Ever notice how every act of culture/social/nature/earth destroying wrath is preceeded by the argument of "they were terrible, horrible people and deserved to die!" and then is followed by "don't kill others" and "don't sin" as well as "forgive others"

In my view: this is how primitive people deal with disaster - blame an unforseen force and assume personal fault - personal fault denotes taht somehow, if you do things right the next time, it won't happen again - forever believing that if only they had sacrificed one more lamb the flood, fire and famine would not have swept over the land. Trying to find a way to possible control and uncontrollable situation.

I think we should watch our backs. Look what happened to the Haitians for having made a pact with the Devil.

Yuppers. Well you can kill in the name of God. But if you dont do what the creator wants.... follow his law... you shall feel his wrath. He loves you and want you to be with him but you MUST follow the law he set because its good for you. Also god protects the US because we follow HIS law. If we dont he removes his protection on our Nation. Got that?

:lamo You mean like the bit that says a parent has to kill a disrespectful child, or you shouldn't wear clothes made from two different fabrics?

Lot pleaded for the innocent. But old fing Pat, he says, that unless we kill the homos we are all guilty.

I don't understand the whole anti-gay thing, but I do believe that god sometimes gets us. For example: if I decide to be a liar and surround myself with friends that are thieves... then I should not be surprised when I'm lied to and stolen from; if one surrounds themself with crap, they get crap.

That said, I don't think gays do any harm and it is very sad to demonize them in attempt to further one's own agenda.

You need some supernatural explanation for that?

Surround yourself with thieves; become a victim of theft. Hmmmmm? It's a mystery. Hmmmm? It must be the work of God or karma. LOL

Moderator's Warning:
This isn’t news. It’s a pretext. Moved.

Pat Robertson demonstrates classic evangelical bigotry and a failure to understand what the bible actually means. As a member of the clergy, he should know better, but he would prefer to spew dishonesty and bigotry then actually learn what the bible really says:

So everyone knows, Sodom and Gommorah was not about homosexuality at all. It was hospitality and protection. God punished those two cities because they were inhospitable, including towards his two angels that he sent. The "sodomy" that he was referring was NOT homosexuality, but was RAPE. The homosexuality misinterpretation comes from the fact that the angry mob wanted to rape (male homosexuality) the angels that visited Lot. This was a very common method of humiliation that was used at the time, especially amongst Pagans towards their enemies. During this time period, we had a patriarchal society, so, with the men in charge, humiliating and intimidating them was more effective. God's warning is that sodomy... RAPE, especially homosexual RAPE, is sinful... hence his destruction of those two cities where that practice occurred. The story says nothing about consentual homosexual behavior.

My god is not supernatural, though karma may be a part of it. I was merely pointing towards some truth to be found in the bible, if one is open minded.

Of course, Sodom wasn't about homosexuality per se, but the commercial nature of the transaction.
The sins of Sodom read remarkably like the sins of America: "pride, fullness of bread, abundance of idleness, haughtiness", etc. There is another striking phrase, in light of recent events ... "neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy." Republicans are killing America, not SSM!

But god also instructs us to follow the laws of the land . . . .so now I'm confused. He's also backing numerous candidate - maybe god's confused?

Question: How does one verify the intended meaning of a parable or writing without asking the author?

Answer: they cannot. All meaning is discovered, neither objective nor contrived.

Readers (such as yourself) interpreting some meaning, even one that resonates with the reader personally, does NOT mean the author intended such a meaning. At most, that interpreted meaning may resonate with a large group of people, which seems to then take on a dimension greater than individual subjectivity. ( This seems to be how classic art stays relevant. )

An alternative is to focus on the text itself. Something many great minds have explored, that is, giving primacy to texts, not authors' intent.

Do you claim to know the authors intent?
If so, how? If not then by what basis can you claim to have a correct or superior interpretation as compared to Robertson?

Nothing in the actual text of Genesis actually refers to what sin the people of Sodom and Gomorrah were guilty of, only that their "sin was great". It is not even known for sure if the angel-raping mob were acting in accordance with the sin that made god so angry. Lot's problem with rape may have been quaint, after all, he seemed to have little problem with letting the mob have sex with his daughters. Maybe all that sex was commonplace and he was just behind the times. Maybe his daughters were really keen on the idea.

For all we know, the sin of Sodom and Gomorrah may have had nothing to do with sex at all. Perhaps they freed all their slaves, and proclaimed universal suffrage. That's certainly contrary to the established rules in the bible. Maybe that's what pissed god off so much. The angel raping bit might just have been a coincidence. In addition, we never see Gomorrah at all. Both those cities were guilty of the same sin.

We have literally no idea what that sin may be. We only know that Lot was a prude, and that those two angels weren't into group sex. But they were into mass murder. Don't forget that they killed the mob outside. That mob didn't actually rape anyone, and presumably didn't pose any real threat to the angels, and the angels murdered every last one of them, young and old. So, killing is good, but sex is bad?

Maybe these stories aren't such a great place to draw morality from, after all...

Maybe those stories are just stories, very old ones.
