Reports concur that human-induced changes are already leading to damaging environmental shifts

" Global warming is occurring at record levels and is due to increasing atmospheric greenhouse gases generated by human activities, according to several new government scientific reports issued in recent weeks. The rapidity of greenhouse gas impacts will make projections and mitigation efforts increasingly difficult and will result in a drastic transformation of Earth’s environment, the reports say.

In a related development, researchers are reporting that airborne black carbon particles—which are a component of soot—hold twice the warming potential as previously thought.

Rising seas, heat waves, erratic and intense rainfall, storm surges, and droughts are among the effects accelerating climate changes now under way. That is one conclusion of a draft report by the National Climate Assessment & Development Advisory Committee, a 60-member federal advisory body established to advise the President and Congress on climate-change issues."

"Meanwhile, analyses by the National Aeronautics & Space Administration and the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration show that 2012 was one of the 10 hottest years on record, on the basis of global average temperature.

Earth’s global average temperature in 2012 was about 58.3 °F, NASA says, further noting that global average temperature has risen about 1.4 °F since recordkeeping began in 1880.

Scientists from the federal agencies say the ranking of one year’s global average temperature over another is less important than the fact that 2012’s temperature is part of a warming trend that began in the late 1970s.

“What matters is this decade is warmer than the last decade, and that decade was warmer than the decade before,” explains Gavin Schmidt, climatologist at NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies. “The planet is warming. The reason it’s warming is because we are pumping increasing amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.”

Another aspect of warming is the effect of airborne black carbon particles. A comprehensive analysis indicates that their climate-warming capability is double what was previously believed (J. Geophys. Res.: Atmos., DOI: 10.1002/jgrd.50171).

Black carbon particles are aggregates of carbon spherules that are produced during combustion of carbon-based fuels. They directly influence climate by strongly absorbing sunlight. When deposited on snow or ice, they reduce the reflectivity of those surfaces and cause melting. Black carbon particles also change the formation and radiation absorptive or reflective properties of clouds, with mixed warming or cooling effects.

Researchers had estimated black carbon climate effects before, but the numbers had varied, says Tami C. Bond, the study’s lead author and an engineering professor at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.

Given the large role black carbon plays in global warming and its shorter lifetime in the atmosphere compared with carbon dioxide and methane, controlling black carbon emissions could be “a short-term, immediate action that we can take to slow climate change,” Bond says.

Diesel engines and household wood and coal burning would be the best black carbon sources to control to limit warming, Bond says."

You can go back at least 30 years and find more on this. It just a matter of knowling what to look for,

And we know even more now, yet some there are still those that deny science like the one above.

You're probably also one of those people who deliberately cranks up the AC on Earth Day or whatever. Being wasteful and polluting our of nothing but spite.

You forget my house is solar, AC is opening windows. I do heat with wood though so please don't call me green.

On the wood smoke thing though, if that is causing global warming then it is very "natural'. The smoke we add to the atmosphere heating our homes is infinitesimal compared to forest fires that burned all summer every summer blotting out the sun for months at a time before Europeans got here in mass and started putting fires out. Saying wood smoke is a man caused pollutant just shows how out of touch with reality and nature these wack job enviro warmers are.

If any part of you turns green, it is wise to seek medical attention immediately.

I won't insult you by calling you green, but I suspect you walk much closer to nature, than
many who just talk the talk.

They are not out of touch. They know their BS really is BS but they don't care. They will seize upon anything...no matter how illogical...if they think they can spin it to their advantage. The wood smoke thing is but one example.

What's worse than their fake, contrived and false concern for global warming is their callous disregard for human beings.

Further from the draft report by the National Climate Assessment & Development Advisory Committee:

"The draft assessment presents a grim picture of the ongoing impact from climate change. Looking to the future, the assessment warns of accelerating effects and the potential to reach a “tipping point” where cumulative climate extremes will exceed mitigation efforts."

The article says,"Diesel engines and household wood and coal burning would be the best black carbon sources to control to limit warming, Bond says." At the risk of repeating myself Bond is full of crap. wood smoke is naturally occurring from forest fires which we now do a good job of putting out. The measly little bit of smoke coming out of our chimneys would not equal the smoke from one forest fire. You guys need to get real.

Let's see your comparison of the difference in carbon output from the preventable forest fires and all the diesel fuel, wood, and coal burning. And, how do you figure it is easier to control forest fires than it s to control the burning of diesel fuel, and the household burning of wood and coal?

I have been talking about the wood burning comment this Bond moron spouted. Anybody so stupid they can not see the relative insignificance of wood heat vs forest fires in putting smoke into the atmosphere is not to be taken seriously. The man has proven himself to be a hard core warmer cult member who has no grasp on reality. Reality is nothing is more natural than wood smoke and the fact that we now put forest fires out instead of letting them burn until the snow puts them out means we have actually taken more smoke out of the air than we put in. This is to the detriment of forest but our air is cleaner for whatever that's worth.

It wasn't just wood they were talking about. So, can you provide evidence that preventable forest fires contribute more to global warming than than all our burning of diesel fuel, wood and coal?

What the deniers refuse to accept, or simply do not understand, is that the earth cannot sequester unlimited amounts of CO2 without heating up. Its called the greenhouse effect. It is an accepted scientific principle. Without man's interference, it has been able to sequester all the CO2 produced naturally. However, by our doubling of the CO2 concentration and removal of vegetation that helps in the sequestration, we have overloaded the earth's ability to mitigate the extra C02 without heating up.

You are missing the point. Lumping wood smoke with coal and diesel is absurd and proves the man is a loon.

Thanks for your opinion, I'll go with the researchers that make more sense than you do.

From the OP:

Another aspect of warming is the effect of airborne black carbon particles. A comprehensive analysis indicates that their climate-warming capability is double what was previously believed (J. Geophys. Res.: Atmos., DOI: 10.1002/jgrd.50171).

No, it is you who is once again missing the point. The particulates released by all of the wood fires that humans use in their homes and backyards are quite real and measurable and can clearly affect the environment. In my state, we have 'clean air days' when wood fires are banned and this precaution makes a very obvious and measurable difference in the air quality. Pointing out the fact that controlling and limiting the particulate filled smoke from wood fires, as well as coal and diesel, would be useful in dealing with this black carbon pollution is both sane and useful. Claiming that controlling the particulate pollution that is under our control would not be useful because forest fires sometimes produce more smoke is what is pretty loony. It ignores the fact that the scientist quoted in that article was specifically talking about the factors that humans have some power to change. We can't prevent all of the forest fires but we can, with some effort, control the level of particulates that our industry, transportation and homes produce.

Wood burns with a bunch of ash and the release of CO2 is not that great. The AGW is probably pretty much a wash.

The article disingenuously states that 2012 is one of the ten warmest. If we are in a warming trend and near the end of that trend, of course this wold be true. Why don't they say it's the 9th or tenth warmest? Whenever inaccuracy aids their case, inaccuracy is what AGW proponents will use.

Does real science rely on inaccuracy, implication and innuendo? No so much. Running a swindle is where these tactics are most often found. In about the year 2000 the warming of 20 years flattened out. It does after every 20 year warming period and has since 1880.

It has happened again. Because this is a predictable occurrence of climate, it has no place in AGW Science.

If it is actually useful, to the AGW Scientist, it's useless.

By the by, if the new and improved black CO2 is so potent, why has the warming stalled?
