BERLIN (Reuters) - The German government has set aside around 3 billion euros for research and development of artificial intelligence, as Europe's economic powerhouse seeks to close a gap in software-led innovation between it and America and Asia.

The sum to be spent up to 2025, outlined in a draft paper seen by Reuters on "AI made in Germany", is a measure of the concern felt in Berlin at the challenge that digital technologies and AI pose to Germany's traditional export-focused manufacturing industries.
===========================================
I believe we are way ahead of Germany & China in the AI arena. Our military & major contractors like Lockheed-Martin are likely spending big $$$ on AI 'black projects' such as sentient anti-satellite weapons for Trump's new Space Force & next-generation spy satellites that can read the fine print in a newspaper article. At least, I hope we are.

China is spending $150 Billion.

And, I would not be surprised to read that they are already catching up with if not inching ahead of the US.

I expect that the large US tech companies like Apple, Microsoft, Google etc are ahead of Lockheed-Martin when it comes to AI. They get the cream of the crop when it comes to computer scientists, and have little in the way of security restrictions on hiring talent from outside the US to work on their AI programs. The are also spending huge on AI systems

Set aside..............they are running a deficit. You can’t set aside something that doesn’t exsist.

The German government actually is running a budget surplus.

Germany recorded a record budget surplus in the first half of this year, an achievement that immediately triggered calls for tax cuts and higher public investment.

According to figures released by the federal statistical office, Germany had a surplus of €48.1bn in the first six months of 2018, equivalent to 2.9 per cent of economic output — the highest level since German reunification in 1990.

The figure is much higher than the surplus for the whole of last year, which stood at €34bn. That suggests that the number for 2018 could set new records. Berenberg Bank predicted it would be equivalent to 1.7 per cent of gross domestic product, compared with 1.2 per cent last year.

So the government could actually spend quite a bit more on AI and still have a budget surplus

I have a feeling that the first country to develop true AI wins “the game”.

You pay to have your brain washed do you? If their economy was in surplus mode GWR wouldn’t be exiting Europe.

Germany has a trade surplus and federally at least a budget surplus. That is reality, not Fantasy Island

Genesee & Wyoming................you can’t be for real.

So you are basing your claim that Germany is running a budget deficit on a short line rail operator?

Are you for real?

With revenues of $170 million in Europe in the third quarter. Vs a multi trillion dollar economy.

Your reasoning must make sense somewhere sometime, but not here and now

The 170 is from England and the Dutch and Belgians. They dumped the German and polish container trains for a loss. Yeah. Germany is considered crap like Mexico and Bolivia was by them.

Again

Germany has the largest trade surplus in the world, a budget surplus of 48 billion euros in the first 6 months of 2018, and you are going to state that Germany is running a deficit because of a short line rail company divested intermodal train.

Basing how a country is doing by looking at just one midsize company is rather idiotic. Heck can we say the US is doing poorly because of GE?

GWR has always bought **** and turned it into a profitable service. Germany was no goose that layed a golden egg.
