Gabrielle Giffords column: ‘I’m furious’

what i understand is that they have rigid gun controls and almost no gun violence
which undermines the assertion that gun controls do not prevent gun violence

No it just goes to show that you know little of their culture either.

Here's a brief history of gun control. How many of the citizens of these countries thought their government had their best interests at heart when establishing gun control? I guess the dissenters were paranoid too?

Here’s a little history lesson regarding gun-grabbing and the carnage that ensued: In 1929, the Soviet Union established gun control. From 1929 to 1953, about 20 million dissidents, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

In 1911, Turkey established gun control. From 1915 to 1917, 1.5 million Armenians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

Germany established gun control in 1938 and from 1939 to 1945, a total of 13 million Jews and others who were unable to defend themselves were rounded up and exterminated.

China established gun control in 1935. From 1948 to 1952, 20 million political dissidents, unable to defend themselves were rounded up and exterminated.

Guatemala established gun control in 1964. From 1964 to 1981, 100,000 Mayan Indians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

Uganda established gun control in 1970. From 1971 to 1979, 300,000 Christians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

Cambodia established gun control in 1956. From 1975 to 1977, one million educated people, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

Defenseless people rounded up and exterminated in the 20th century because of gun control: 56 million.

OK, Skippy. Let's have laws that keep just who, allowed to walk freely among us, is a nut case as secret as possible, only your federal gov't (NICS database) will be "in the know". Should a nut case walk into a FFL dealer, they will be denied buying a gun, yet even the FFL dealer will not be told why, so they can only buy ammo there. The nut case can still remain free to try to fool any friends, strangers or relatives into loaning or selling them a gun.

Perhaps the best idea is to, gasp, lock up that nut case, or even, as a necessary (liberal?) compromise, to place that nut case (along with all other dangerous felons) in an online database, accessable to all of us, just as we do for "sex offenders". If the idea is really to prevent gun/ammo sales to crazy/dangerous folks then why keep the NICS database content a federal secret? We do not need a database of all legal gun purchases or even those denied a legal gun buying attempt (the current/proposed law); what we need is an easily accessable database of all that should not ever have the ability to legally purchase (or possess) guns/ammo.

Nutcases have rights too. Unless and until they hurt someone, they are free to move around town just like you and I.

I don't think this is true. Hitler in fact relaxed already existing guns laws.
Unfortunately for LaPierre et al., the notion that Hitler confiscated everyone’s guns is mostly bogus. And the ancillary claim that Jews could have stopped the Holocaust with more guns doesn’t make any sense at all if you think about it for more than a minute.

University of Chicago law professor Bernard Harcourt explored this myth in depth in a 2004 article published in the Fordham Law Review. As it turns out, the Weimar Republic, the German government that immediately preceded Hitler’s, actually had tougher gun laws than the Nazi regime. After its defeat in World War I, and agreeing to the harsh surrender terms laid out in the Treaty of Versailles, the German legislature in 1919 passed a law that effectively banned all private firearm possession, leading the government to confiscate guns already in circulation. In 1928, the Reichstag relaxed the regulation a bit, but put in place a strict registration regime that required citizens to acquire separate permits to own guns, sell them or carry them.

So..I'd say you've just been pwnd.

not really. the fact is Jews were generally disarmed. We saw what happened in the Polish Ghetto-how many Nazis were tied down by this resistance movement. Of course lots of the Jews were like American citizens--"IT CANNOT HAPPEN HERE". that is why the anti gunners move incrementally

true, German, Polish and Ukrainian Jews could not have stopped the holocaust. but if even one out of ten jews had killed at least one German soldier or Stormtrooper-do the math

THey would have had to resist early and with overwhelming force. By the time they knew they were in trouble though, it was too late.

yeah I see parallels about our rights in this country and that is why the gun ban movement is incremental

Nutcases have rights too. Unless and until they hurt someone, they are free to move around town just like you and I.

If these nutcases are to be free, just as you and I, then they are also free to own guns. This is the quandry that the left finds itself in; both insisting upon allowing crazy and dangerous folks to remain "free" yet trying to prevent them from gaining "access to" weapons to commit total mayhem, as they are often prone to do. Gabby's personal nutcase is no longer free, so we need no new law for him any longer. You can't have it both ways by insisting that all law abiding gun owners jump through more hoops and pay larger "user fees" while refusing to deal with those that you deem "too dangerous" to have guns.

Seems crazy has degrees--too crazy to own a gun, but not crazy enough to be locked away. BTW: people convicted of Domestic Violence cannot own them either. Makes sense to me.

I would have overturned the Lautenberg amendment if I had that power

its retroactivity is a slap to our concept of laws

lots of people are accused of "domestic violence" in bitter divorce cases. women often make that charge and more and more men are in order to gain leverage. 20 years ago those were often pled out because there was no real repercussions to a M 1 (like a DUI) rap. Then along comes the Lautenberg amendment and thousands of cops and soldiers lose their jobs because they can no longer own a gun because they were accused of slapping their wives or gave an ass kicking to a child who was doing drugs or worse

Your desire for "degrees" of freedom is an unworkable system; if it worked then there would be no underage drinking, smoking or recreational drug use. Anyone willing to commit violent crime is also quite willing to lie, cheat or steal to get a gun.

So...too crazy to own a gun should equate to too crazy to have one on one access to Children, or cars, or gasoline, or fertilizer, right?

You would think...but, tis not the case. Just like OJ wasn't banned from owning a knife.

Makes no sense to me either.

well...with a little luck someday they will put your medical records on display and anyone that has had a diagnosis of anxiety, depression, bipolar d/o, psychosis can be force sterilized a d removed from society. You know...for the children.

Giffords is a real brain damaged scumbag. (typical left wing corrupt POS) And she was even more of a scumbag before her well-deserved lobotomy. Nothing she says should be taken seriously.

You are a very classy and make me "proud to be an American"

Why would OJ have been banned from owning a knife?

Domestic violence, if banning knives were as popular as guns. He confessed to beating his wife once.

you are correct that the NRA is doing the bidding of its members
unfortunately, the congress is not doing the bidding of the people it has sworn to represent
PolitiFact | Gabby Giffords says Americans "overwhelmingly" support expanding background checks
special interests, and the money they bring to congress, now preside over congress and its actions
pretty sound reason to be furious

Cornhusker Kickback, Gator Aid, Louisianna Purchase, Senior Swindle......yes we're aware of all that.

So universal background checks are a bad thing? Because????

don't know about you, but we already have background checks in my state. waiting periods on handguns. etc. etc. etc. why do we need another law mandating something we already have?

Because, to the liberals, it's not good enough for States to make their own laws...it has to come from the almighty, wise and just federal government. To them, individuals and States have no business deciding things for themselves.

You might as well ban him from owning a rock then.

The original comment was facetious. So, yeah. No baseball bats either.
