What was the one food you thought of as gross or unappetizing at first, but you ended up really liking after you tasted it?

For me it was poutine. When I first heard about it I thought it was just stupid. After a friend dared me to order it I finally tasted it and was in heaven. Now I order this every chance I get.

The first time I ever traveled to Paris was the first time I ever tried escargot. I figured if I was ever going to try it then that was the place. I full expected to hate it and stop at one. But it was delicious and finished the whole serving.

Just add some crumbled bacon an it is natures best food

fries
gravy
cheese
and bacon

Anchovies.

Mind you, it's not a love affair with them and the canned stuff isn't on my "to do" list but well prepared anchovies can be outstanding. You won't find me ordering them on a pizza but if a place has a nice preparation (and happens to be on a canal in Venice) I'll not only try them but will enjoy them.

Soft shell crab. Years ago I was in Annapolis and there used to be a collection of different eateries at the horseshoe where the harbor began. I had eaten steamed crabs and a soft shell crab sandwich sounded like a good thing. The sandwich was wrapped in a wax paper wrapper and in a small brown bag. After I got clear of the food area, I began to unwrap my sandwich. I was surprised to see legs and appendages sticking out from in between the bread slices. I took a bite prepared to be grosssed out, but it was delicious and I have gotten some at the grocery store and made them at home

Surimi crab sticks. I thought I would hate them having tried synthetic shrimp in Holland and disliked the very idea. I love them.

Good poutine - and it has to be from Canada - is a wonder on a plate. Had several different dishes of it in a trip to the Canadian maritimes two years ago and they were among the culinary highlights of my entire year. One had bacon and maple syrup on it and that plate was returned to the kitchen without a drop on it.

One thing I never thought I would like was sushi but a New York artist introduced me to it some 35 years ago and its now my favorite food to go out for.

My wife and I went to Acme Oyster House in New Orleans a few years ago and we ate four dozen of the little gems. Great eats!!!!!!

Cannot wait to go back on another culinary vacation to the Big Easy...... and another trip to Acme.

Just an excuse to eat garlic butter! Yum!

I like squid in a Japanese style salad, but all the octopus I have tried has the same texture as frog legs, kinda springy...
Love oysters, just returned from a cruise that had a few stops in Normandy and the oysters are world class.....

I tried a big apple snail out of the river here, took it home and steamed it, it was like chewing rubber. To be fair, I bet a French chef is a little better than me as far as preparation goes! :) I just steamed it and put butter on it.

I caught a 20 pound garfish, everyone claims they are no good, they are parroting misinformation.

I have only tried the canned ones, might as well eat straight up salt...yukk.

Gar's are great eating! Takes good tools to prepare them because of the ganoid scales, and be careful not to leave any roe behind on the meat because they are poisonous to humans. I prefer larger gar 20-25 lbs.

1/2 cup of Olive oil
1 table spoon of Old Bay
1/4 cup of honey
1 teaspoon of yellow mustard
8 tablespoons of lemon pepper
1 tablespoon Worchester sauce
1 tablespoon of Louisiana or Crystal hot sauce (Tobasco if you like it hot)

Wrap in tin foil and grill.

When I was much younger, I was convinced that raw fish would be absolutely disgusting (thanks to my father, a physician who seems to have been somewhat irrationally influenced by exposure to knowledge and experience of food-borne diseases/parasites/etc).

Got to college, GF suggests Sushi, got a little high, got a little drunk, and we ordered ngiri/rolls and I figured "what the hell.....just put the food in your mouth and chew." I did and it was good.

I suppose that gets to my non-legal/non-medical advice: if you're curious about some sort of food but it icks you out, have a little toke/drink - whatever suits you, do yoga instead if you like - and just put the food in your mouth. Chances are you'll realize you were wrong to avoid it.

So from then on, I set out to eat just about as much of everything as I could. I do have irrational objections to sexual organs (no, I don't want to eat a horse's **** no matter what they say about it, tvm), brains, and insects/spiders. I'd have to be in dire straits to eat that.

Though I did accidentally eat duck balls one time. Tasting menu. Dish with various beans and duck testicles. I separated out what I thought were the testicles. At the end of the meal, I found out that what I separated were some smaller cousins of a kidney bean.

Yep, I knew about the roe's toxicity. How I cooked it- first, take tin snips and cut down the spine from the skull to the tail, then cut a T behind the head, take a fillet knife and shell it like backstraps, very few bones. I cut it in fingers and bread and deep fry.

The taste and texture is about half way between pork and shrimp, not fishy, flaky or oily. Poor mans lobster. Pound per pound, more clean, boneless meat than gamefish.

Now, don't tell nobody.

Garfish sucks, don't even try to eat it:)

I had the best octopus salad at a Greek restaurant. Unbelievably tasty and ever so tender. That is what turned me on to it.
Had some bites from a Korean place and had I not spit it out, I'd still be chewing on it.

I believe that you have to massage/beat up an octopus to make it soft.

Ah, the Triple Bypass Special. My sample of it wasn't so good, and that was in Quebec.

When I finally got around to trying caviar I really liked it. Pricey, though.

Baby Octopus. Quite tasty actually, when you get over how weird it looks.
Our national supermarkets are gonna start selling comestible insects (grasshoppers & ants). Can't wait to try that out.

I also tried cow tongue. It was... horrible. Do not recommend.

Love baby octopus. Not sure about insects, although it is just mind over matter, I suppose.
Cow tongue is good when it is cleaned and prepared properly. Try it again elsewhere before you dismiss it.
