Some good news for those that support women’s right of dominion over their own bodies.
Florida voters will decide whether to protect abortion rights
Justices upheld the 15-week abortion banpassed by the governor and GOP lawmakers in 2022. Because that was upheld, the much more restrictive six-week ban on abortion will take effect in 30 days.
In a statement, state Rep. Anna Eskamani said:
"The implementation of the 6 week abortion ban in our state will be devastating, and is another example of extreme far-right Republican politicians who will stop at nothing to strip us away of our bodily autonomy and personal decision making. For everyday Floridians, regardless of party affiliation, there is overwhelmingly agreement that decisions around one's pregnancy are personal and private. While we navigate the dangerous and life-risking consequences of this six week abortion ban I feel confident that the tide will turn in Florida come November."
On the flip side, Justices rejected arguments by the attorney general and decided the language was clear on the initiative to "limit government interference with abortion," therefore sending it to the ballot during elections.
If 60% of voters approve in November, abortion rights will be enshrined in the state constitution.
"No longer will decisions about abortion be left between politicians disconnected from the realities of everyday Floridian's lives. No longer will health care be treated as a wedge issue to divide us. This November, Floridians will get the chance to pass an initiative to remove politicians from private medical decisions around abortion," Lauren Brenzel, the Yes on 4 campaign director, said.
