The problem is that many, many people already think the police relish in the thought of abusing protestors. Stuff like this only gives credence to that view. There was a better way to get the point across. Something like "we don't want to hurt anyone, and if you protest peacefully and follow instructions, we will protect your right to do so. If you attack us, we will defend ourselves and you will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law." What is so hard about that? Police should not openly fantasize about letting their dogs chew people up. That's not the kind of person you want in, let alone in charge of, a police force.

So, you're cool with cops declaring that they will be the judge, jury and executioner if they see someone throwing rocks. That's ... weird.

My question is: do you think this type of rhetoric is more likely to discourage violent protestors, or peaceful protestors?

Hehe... this is a methodology conversation again. ;)

I watched the video already today. He said what he said. I'm just not sure why he chose to say it that way. LE response should be consistent to where people know what they're getting themselves into without needing this kind of messaging. It sounds more like a provocation than a deterrent.

Then again, it is Florida... I think the cultural differences are great enough to where I'd have to have this explained to me before I come to any final conclusions.

Up here the guy would probably be fired. There would be little tolerance from either the left or the right for the police threatening to kill people ahead of a protest.

I've got no problems with police defending themselves. This just seems a little over the top. But, maybe folks things made a bit clearer in Florida, I dunno.. hehe

The Sheriff did not specifically mention "riot" or "rioters", did he, if so I missed it?
Then again, I have no problem with anyone throwing a brick, firebomb, or pointing a weapon at officers having deadly force used against them.
But the Sheriff's words are an obvious escalation of rhetoric that quite possibly could incite folk to try what he will "kill you graveyard dead" over.
I hope his harsh rhetoric will not incite his officers to wound up trigger happy actions.
