Florida’s House of Representatives passed a bill Wednesday that would let the state take transgender minors away from their families if they are receiving gender-affirming care.

The measure passed by a vote of 82-31. A previous version of the bill passed the Senate earlier this month by a vote of 27-12, and the amended version now goes back to the other chamber for a final vote. Governor Ron DeSantis has previously expressed support for the bill and will likely sign it into law if it passes.

If it becomes law, the bill will allow the state to take custody of the child if they have been “subjected to or is threatened with being subjected to” gender-affirming care, which includes puberty blockers and hormone replacement therapy. Florida courts could modify custody agreements from a different state if the minor is likely to receive gender-affirming care in that second state. The text refers to gender-affirming care as “sex-reassignment prescriptions or procedures” and qualifies this care as a form of “physical harm.”...

...A little more than an hour earlier, the House passed a bill banning drag performances, which heads to DeSantis’s desk.

I posted a thread about this bill when it was first introduced. There was some doubt back then that it would pass, or if it did pass that it would be instantly overturned. Well, here we are. When DeSantis signs this bill into law (and he certainly will) Florida is basically impossible to even visit for transgender children or parents. It allows the state to take custody of a child even if they are "at risk" of receiving gender affirming care. One of the stated "risks" is if either parent/guardian is trans even if the child is not.

Honestly I feel sick. There are thousands of transgender kids in FL. If their families are supportive they can try to flee the state or try to hide that they are trans. If there are trans parents/guardians who have kids or have adopted kids the state will take their kids into custody as well, and they also need to flee.

How long in the age of social media and mass surveillance until the state starts spying on kids/parents to try to find transgender kids? My partner is nonbinary. How long until they are considered "mentally ill" and forcibly "institutionalized" by the state? Despite my fears about where these laws were heading...I'd hoped I was wrong and it would never come to this...

For the record, if you support bills like this, I do hate you. I hate you and hate everything you stand for. You and people who think like you are responsible for some of the most horrific actions of humanity. If you think this statement is "uncivil" I don't care.

No point in civility towards absolutely disgusting laws.

Of course, DeSantis will sign this bill. Honestly, if he somehow does win the nomination, he's gonna have a tough time trying to spin the litany of the bullshit he's ushered through the legislature to moderate swing voters. DeSantis has been propped up as this absolute political mastermind, but he's honestly a complete idiot for not even pretending to be slightly moderate on any issue.

Damn, my state of Alabama is beginning to feel more liberal as I watch what is happening in that weird state south of me...

Right! At least before, our state motto was “At Least We Aren’t Mississippi!”

Looks like we may have to change that. 😂

These Florida elected representatives passed this without fear of reprisal. Which could mean the districts are gerrymandered and/or the constituencies are as reactionary as the reps…

State power (authoritarian) at its finest.

I thought the right didn't like the government butting into their private lives. I thought the right didn't want an all-powerful government body dictating how they should live and who they can love.

Just more right-wing lies. Just like always.

Hypocrisy, thy name is Republican.

Hell, tons from your state moved to FL.

Gerrymandered, and they have a supermajority in both chambers.

They don't give a single ****.

I remember just a week or so ago that the right was screaming that we needed to let parents decide what's best for their kids.

Now, suddenly & without warning, Goddamn Nazis.

The conservatives had successfully poisoned Uganda with their anti LGBT beliefs.

Now Uganda has made being gay a crime that people can face the death penalty for being gay.

The conservatives here in America support it and I wouldn't be surprised if they want that law here.

It's pretty fascinating to watch, though terrible for the people who will be affected by this absurd form of personal micromanagement. From a choice perspective this is an odd one for the Florida GOP, since it flies in the face of parental choice in how they care for their children. I can understand this kind of legislation if there were cases of parents forcing gender affirming care on children, because at least then there's a case to be made on behalf of children; this is not that though.

The state has taken upon itself to deprive parents of options that could benefit their children through gender affirming care. The important thing to note is this is not law yet, but if it does become law, it's one based on value judgments of some portion of the population and not a medical/psychological one. This continues the trend of "you have choice, but the ones we allow you to have" form of governance.

They wanted parental choice for themselves, and only themselves.

It isn't an odd choice at all. They hate queer people more than they love parental choice. That's all there is to it.

This will only perpetuate the brain drain out of Florida.

Yeah, why be honest and just write what the bill actually says, when you can pretend that it says something else? Kind of like when the article says that they "banned drag performances," which is also not even remotely true.
