Jeez, this guy lies like Trump. No wonder he is the heir apparent.

DeSantis said officials are pumping out 33 million gallons of water a day from the pond, and that the water "is not radioactive,"

But...

Phosphogypsum is the "radioactive waste" left over from processing phosphate ore into a state that can be used for fertilizer, according to the Center for Biological Diversity.

"In addition to high concentrations of radioactive materials, phosphogypsum and processed wastewater can also contain carcinogens and heavy toxic metals," the center said in a statement on Saturday. "For every ton of phosphoric acid produced, the fertilizer industry creates 5 tons of radioactive phosphogypsum waste, which is stored in mountainous stacks hundreds of acres wide and hundreds of feet tall."

Sheesh

The ever quotable Wikipedia says:
Phosphogypsum is radioactive due to the presence of naturally occurring uranium and thorium,
and their daughter isotopes radium, radon, polonium, etc. Marine-deposited phosphate typically
has a higher level of radioactivity than igneous phosphate deposits, because uranium is present
in seawater. Other components of phosphogypsum are Cd (5-28 ppm), fluoride (ca 1%), and silic

So you agree that DeathSantis was lying again?

Seems everyone has been busy declaring this phosphogypsum problem a non-problem.

Thirty years ago, the U.S Environmental Protection Agency determined that while this radioactive, toxic waste had the qualities of a hazardous waste, it would not regulate it as such. Instead, the EPA decided that the fertilizer industry that produced it could just pile it in mountains called phosphogypsum stacks, or “gyp stacks.”

There are now more than 70 of these gyp stacks in the United States, with almost half in Florida, on top of our sinkhole-prone, just-barely-above-sea-level terrain.

How big of a problem? This big of a problem.

In 1997, one stack in Mulberry breached and flooded into the Alafia River, killing everything in the water all the way to the Gulf of Mexico. In 2004, a gyp stack in Riverview breached at the top during a hurricane, spilling its toxic contents, which eventually made their way into Hillsborough Bay, causing a massive fish kill.

It is a problem if the dam breaks, but the water itself will not retain radioactivity. It appears they are doing the right thing here.

What is the level of radioactivity of the water? That is what matters. Saying it is "radioactive" is fear mongering here if the levels of radioactivity are so small they are either undetectable or below the safe threshold. There are far more important concerns to worry about here than the radioactivity of the water. It is fearmongering against radiation to claim radioactivity is a problem here if it simply isn't. It is not wrong to say it isn't radioactive if it is below the safe threshold.

The problem is that these toxic chemicals, high concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorous will cause an increase in toxic algae blooms. It has nothing to do with the radioactivity levels of the water, which have been said to be small, not at all a concern. It is just people hear "radioactive" and think of what they hear about in movies not what is really there. Radioactive materials are all around us. Most are not harmful, at least the radiation is not harmful. There could be other things about those materials though that are harmful and should be focused on.

Then we might as well say all water is radioactive because that is the truth.

I can't stand DeSantis and he has plenty to be held accountable for in regards to this situation, but claiming that he is lying here is pretty bad, petty here when it is obvious that he means that it is not concerningly radioactive. The radioactivity of the water in this case is not at all a main concern, nor should it be a concern at all. It is simply too small.

So you agree that DeathSantis was lying again?
No. This isn't lying. DeSantis is a lying toolbag in general, but this is not lying when this is taken in context. Is it lying to say that your drinking water isn't radioactive? This should be obvious that it was a relative to statement.

I wonder how many people realize that bananas are radioactive?

I reread the article, and I'm not sure where the quotes are coming from. Maybe @calamity could clarify?
