Finland formally requests to join NATO

Good for Finland, this is completely on Russia and Putin that this has happened. He could well have left alone and continued selling oil and gas happily to the world. Instead he has demonstrated how weak and incompetent much of the Russian military is and in all likelihood bankrupted his economy for years to come.

Turkey’s already said it opposes Finland and Sweden joining, so its a moot point unless Helsinki and or Washington figure out what Erdogan wants and give it to him.....or figure out some way to bypass the Turks.

“Turkey's foreign minister said on Sunday that Sweden and Finland must stop supporting terrorist groups in their countries, provide clear security guarantees and lift export bans on Turkey as they seek membership in NATO.

Speaking after a NATO foreign ministers meeting in Berlin, Mevlut Cavusoglu said he met his Swedish and Finnish counterparts and all were seeking to address Turkey's concerns.

He added that Turkey was not threatening anybody or seeking leverage but speaking out especially about Sweden's support for the PKK Kurdish militant group, deemed a terrorist group by Turkey, the European Union and the United States.

There absolutely needs to be security guarantees here. They need to stop supporting terrorist organizations," Cavusoglu told Turkish reporters in Berlin. He added that Swedish and Finnish bans on exporting of some of their defence sector goods to Turkey must end.”

Putin is a stable genius like, what the hell was his name? Starts a war to keep nato from expanding, yup, stable genius.

Erdogan’s a tyrant in his own right. We’ll see if NATO rolls over for him
That Turkey is part of NATO in the first place is BS ..gave aid to ISIS.

Just another Muslim, low life shit country in that part of the world.

Turkey joined NATO seventy or so years before it gave aid to ISIS, so its safe to say that wasn’t even a consideration at the time.

Kurd's have had a long history of discrimination perpetrated against them by the Turkish government ..massacres have periodically occurred against the Kurd's.

The PKK is nothing more than the Kurds fighting back, that the US would deem a terrorist group is total BS.

I doubt Erdogan is very serious, he is probably posturing. I am more worried about Orban.

Okay, the question than should be can Turkey be expelled from NATO for its support for ISIS.

There isn’t even a method to kick a country out of NATO in the first place.

The Turks have already laid out a list of demands, largely revolving around the PKK. I don’t think they are bluffing.

True, just like Trump who wanted to suck Putin's dick Orban the Nationalist is pretty much on the same page.

Erdogan isn't stupid. The way he worded it is a pretty good indicator he's going to use it to extract concessions from NATO.

This has not stopped speculation as to whether a nation may nevertheless be expelled from NATO and if so, how. Indeed, what are the options in the absence of a formal process for suspending or terminating membership?

NATO isn't the only way a nation can have a bilateral treaty with the USA or other major NATO power.

That would bypass both Erdogan and Orban. It probably wouldn't even have to come to that - if there was a similar military pact suggested that excluded Turkey and Hungary - the two retards would back down over Finland and Sweden.

I am more worried about Orban.

If they give in to Erdogan, that just gives Orban more leverage unless see above.

Yes it's more that Finland has formally declared it intends to seek membership, which isn't yet seeking membership.

In Finland at least a parliamentary debate is expected next week, where every MP will try to get a speeking turn declaring themselves to be the biggest supporter of NATO of all times (even when it in most ncases absolutely isn't true).

Finland must be prepared for new intimidation tactics from Russia but avoid overreacting. If American troops are sent to the Finnish border, it could trigger another world war. It is up to European nations to protect Finland by sending their own troops over there.

To be honest I am very ambivalent to the membership myself. I can see several disadvantages to the membership, I can only see one possible advantage.

Finland have a lot of troops themselves. What they lack is military equipment.

We have troops. We have a conscription system. Troops is not an issue (especially when the Russian army is busy in Ukraine), it's more replacement for fallen troops that would become an issue if a conflict begins.
