You know, the conservatives that Churchill was referring to in this quote have little or nothing to do with the conservative wing of the Republican party.
I know, but it doesn't really matter what he means, because it applies to U.S. politics too, in my opinion.

No, Gerald Ford was a moderate Republican- so moderate, in fact, that many moderate Democrats have more in common with him than they do with most members of their own party.

I know... I was kidding. It's too bad about Gerry Ford--his heart was in the right place, but he wasn't a very effective president.

I can't stand many of the moderate Democrats like Ben Nelson, Joe Lieberman, or Mary Landrieu (sp?), but I very much like many of the moderate Republicans like Olympia Snowe, John McCain, and Arlen Spector.

I was in college, I didn't know any better. :doh

Then I went Perot twice (the second time out of protest) and Bush twice, even though writing in McCain was on my mind (McCain in the primaries.)

This link shows what Thatcher did to the Conservative Party and what Blair, in turn, did to the Labour Party. Churchill would have been closer to the pre-Thatcherite conservatives. My score was 0.25, -1.38:

I've taken this many times.

Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -8.77

I would be considered extremist.
