VA requires COVID-19 vaccination for health care workers

The Department of Veterans Affairs has became the first major federal agency to require health care workers to get COVID-19 vaccines.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Department of Veterans Affairs on Monday became the first major federal agency to require health care workers to get COVID-19 vaccines, as the aggressive delta variant spreads and some communities report troubling increases in hospitalizations among unvaccinated people.

The VA’s move came on a day when nearly 60 leading medical and health care organizations issued a call for health care facilities to require their workers to get vaccinated.

At the VA, vaccines will be now mandatory for specified health care personnel — including physicians, dentists, podiatrists, optometrists, registered nurses, physician assistants and others who work in departmental facilities or provide direct care to veterans, said VA Secretary Veterans Affairs Secretary Denis McDonough.

It's about damn time.
 
On an individual basis, the Long Beach VA decided several months ago to aim for a 95% staff vax rate and blew past it in a little over a month.
Wifey has to go back in again, in about a week for yet another kidney procedure, so it is comforting to know.
They are so strict down there that not only will I be barred from visiting her, they won't even allow me to bring in outside food.
 
It should be extended to all hospitals. This so-called hoax has turned into a rabid vampire, not just snuffing lives but eating up valuable resources.
IF the path we're on continues, we'll be paying for as much monies regarding health care as if we had a tremendously expensive infrastructure bill. This IS a win or lose scenario.
 
NYC is doing the same for all city employees starting 8/13. You either show proof of vaccination or submit to a weekly covid test and wear an N95 mask on the job.
 
WHAT TOOK THEM SO LONG? I've read the lack of full approval was holding the feds back. Guess not. They should have done this in January.

And that will lead to many states doing the same.
Personally I think all public school teachers should be mandated to be vaccination.

Considering this violates the Nuremberg code and probably all kinds of laws I would imagine this will be very quickly litigated.

Both the Nuremberg code and your post speak of experimentation. Experimentation is not what’s happening. The vaccines are experimental - an administrative classification.

That is not the same thing as experimentation.

And if that is an issue it can be easily remedied by giving a testing alternative or possibly simply laying the people off.

The unvaccinated should not be allowed in public period. It's time to call these people out and publicly shame them until they get vaccinated.

I'd be "down with" what you say if you were equally adamant about not wanting to pay monies for the morbidities and mortalities associated with obesity. 11% of all healthcare dollars is spent on diabetes alone (which is only one of many obesity driven diseases). And diabetes is still a growth "industry". Emphasize: that's just one obesity related disease. Then you have the fact that obesity is an exacerbating factor for the mortality of Covid. Be congruent is what I'm asking.

I'm sure a lot more people would take the Covid vaccine seriously if they saw sincere work being done toward mitigating Covid instead of telling them the only answer is that they have to have the vaccine. It's like telling all the other people to drive safe so that you may blow everyone off the road with your driving. If you really want to change people's minds - show them just how seriously you are taking this yourself.

Not the covid epicenter, unfortunately. My state will never have any kind of vaccine or mask mandate.

She will, between Dallas and Long Beach, the VA has saved her life something like eight or nine times, but this is not one of those situations.
Ker kidney just likes to make stones like crazy and they're scrambling to figure out how to reduce it without her becoming malnourished.
They gave her a sheet two years ago on food restrictions...the list of stuff she COULD eat was one page double spaced.
The list of things she could NOT eat was fourteen pages, and I pointed out to them that she'd be in severe deficiencies of almost every vitamin except C in a matter of weeks, plus she is five feet eight and 120 pounds, up from 108 three months ago.
She'd be down to 75 pounds in six months on the diet they expected her to follow and breaking bones every time she sat up.
I've been fattening her up so she'd have more cushion tissue on her butt to avoid pressure sores where her pelvis meets the femur.
Maybe another ten pounds and she will be perfect just like when I first met her.

They just moved her surgery up to first week in September so all I have to do is keep her drinking lots of water and lots of citrus (to dissolve the stones) and watching her output like a hawk for any signs of sepsis.
If she has a sepsis crash they will of course move her to the front of the line, but right now she's holding up pretty well and she's looking good and healthy.
The part that sucks is that her kidney is prone to making so much stone material in large part because she had radiation sickness from the Navy...that's what trashed her kidney and bladder.

I agree, many far right states will never do a mask or a vaccine mandate.
All the more reason to do it on a federal level

Given how the Delta has so quickly escalated I think it's inevitable that those who are unvaccinated will end up having a direct experience with it. They will all know someone who had a bad experience from it. I'm already seeing and hearing about previously unvaccinated folks finally realizing the danger they are in. I am finding out many people at my work have had Covid and most are just now talking about it because they were embarrassed. Almost all of them said it was horrific. I think we are gonna get a rush of these people to get the vaccine.

You really think a "war on obesity/diabetes" would convince any anti-vaxxers to get their shots?
There is also an ongoing campaign against obesity.
Remember when Michelle Obama's advocacy for healthier school lunches was considered an oppressive gov't overreach?
Most of those squawkers are probably members of today's anti-vax crowd.

As if lockdowns, mask mandates and a desperate search for a vaccine, weren't enough evidence for Covid's seriousness?
Any rational person might figure out that a rising death toll means they should very seriously consider vaccination.
But, we'll try it your way..............
