In competitions, a number of different characteristics may be uses to separate and/or qualify competitors. They may refer to age, height, or weight, for example. Does it make sense to pass a law preventing 9 year olds from competing with 11 year olds? Surely, 11 year olds would have an advantage, right? But no, it doesn’t make sense to force all sports to one fixed set of rules.

So you think your more knowledgeable that the hundreds of thousands of coaches, officials, medical experts, etc. that have designed and developed age-groups athletic leagues and organizations? By the way, the way most youth leagues work 9YO's and 11YO's would be in the same division.
Also most leagues have rules attuned to age gender differences; leagues for younger kids may be mixed gender, while older kids may be be split. The objective is to give kids a chance to play and compete in a relatively fair and competitive game.

I could say the same thing about height with basketball. I could rant about how it’s unfair for short kids to be forced to compete with tall kids. Then I could outlaw basketball unless they set up all sports leagues exactly how I, personally, dictate.

Edited to add: In 2024 they nearly tied again. USA saved the day by scoring the winning goal in the last 2 minutes of the game.
