Senator John Cornyn's announcement that the FBI will step in to help locate Texas Democratic lawmakers who fled the state to deny quorum over a mid-decade redistricting bill raised alarms for legal analysts. The announcement from Cornyn, a Texas Republican, raised questions about whether this is a proper, or political, use of the FBI. Texas Republicans are seeking to redraw the state's congressional boundaries to give Republicans an advantage and thwart potential losses in the 2026 midterm elections. Democrats left the state to deny quorum and block a vote on the bill, which they view as blatantly partisan gerrymandering.

Michael McAuliffe, a former federal prosecutor and former elected state attorney, told Newsweek that the use of the FBI to find the lawmakers is "well beyond alarming." "The FBI's function is to investigate potential violations of federal law, conduct specified national security functions, and perform background investigations for potential presidential nominees," he said. "Nowhere in the statutory list of powers that I know of is tracking down political officer holders of an opposition party. "The assignment to pursue state elected officials without clear investigative jurisdiction is a crass abuse of the immense authority of the Bureau. It's an insult to the thousands of special agents who took an oath to protect the nation, not answer the call of politicization." The FBI being used for this amounts to "pure, naked political purposes" and is a "bull's-eye hit on the rule of law," he said.

The Texas Democrats are not breaking any Federal law, and their freedom of movement in the United States is not restricted.

Despite what Texas Senator John Cornyn may believe, the FBI is not an arm of the Texas Republican Party.

This amounts to the continuing Trump/GOP weaponization of the Department of Justice and Federal Bureau of Investigation to serve the Trump/GOP political/ideological agenda.

It's funny how Biden was weaponizing government according to the right and yet not a peep from them as trump truly weaponizes the federal government against the Democrats. This will be some interesting times for future historians.

Because it was all a scam.

Suddenly, our friends on the left are worried about the FBI doing the bidding of the party in power.

That said, Trump and the FBI have no business in this matter.

When did the FBI do the bidding of democrats?
That said, Trump and the FBI have no business in this matter.
Agreed. The elephant in the room is not either party. All this is because Trump fears a democrat-controlled House would investigate his actions.

Russiagate.

So, both parties are to blame, but it's all Trump's fault?

I'm surprised it's just the FBI.

Seems like the NSA should be monitoring cell phone traffic.

Maybe task a spy satallite or two.

no
Amazing, no? MAGA will never stop trying to relitigate Trump’s collision.

Yeah no. I was neck deep in Russia gate. This didnt happen. Through the Mueller report and the senate report. Through the SC going vier everything. They found one agent who titled something and nothing really happened to him.

Now because trump won he's gonna try to change the narrative with cherry picking things.

There was no collusion. That was a fabrication that turned the FBI in to an investigative arm of the DNC, which is the point.

They're going to need an entire library to hold all the history that will be written about the maga era. Add to that, a few new prisons to hold all these criminals.

The only thing for this subject that should have universal agreement is the FBI has no authority in this matter.

We can stop here then. Im not interested in your ignorance.
Roger stone alone shows me how little you know about this topic.

Good luck

Just so we are clear, weaponizing the government is fine as long as the “correct” party is in control!

Russiagate.
Trump is responsible for that investigation. He asked Russia to get involved. They did. A republican appointed by a republican did the investigation.
So, both parties are to blame, but it's all Trump's fault?
Yes. Both parties acted. But Trump is the one who asked Texas to redistrict. He is afraid of hearing that might occur in a democratic House. If he hadn’t, no republican attempt, no democratic response. This happened in July. Did you miss that?

There was. Read the Mueller Report.
The report found no conspiracy between Trump and Putin. It also found that Trump had obstructed things several times. But the right’s fantasy that this was something sinister is absurd. Trump asked Russia to get involved. They did. US intelligence agencies reported this. Trump asked Putin, and announced that Putin said no. Typical Trump approach. Typical MAGA-folks denial.

After a few days, they are missing persons. The FBI handles those ;)
