maybe we do... there is pretty good evidence to the contrary, but i would agree the to the second part. but keeping OUR workers is not the issue with immigration, is it?

We could look back at the turn of the century, namely things like US steel, founded by an immigrant. But just recently, look at first gen immigrants who formed some of the biggest companie stoday.. I mean who founded google? Immigrant Who founded Ebay? Immigrant. Who founded Intel? Immigrant.

The reason this country is at the top is because of immigrants. The panama canal, the thing that made us a world power, was formulated by a European immigrant.

I'm entirely in support of taking advantage of other nations' brain drain, but I think we've got more than enough Americans already to handle the untrained and low-paying jobs. We don't need other nations' riff-raff when we've already got plenty of our own.

Illegal immigrants fill jobs that most Americans just plain refuse to do. There was an agricultural group a while back that ran a "take our jobs" campaign, mostly fruit picking and such. They to help get a job for anyone and everyone who would take it.

Hardly anybody signed up.

We need to allow(and give incentives) for highly educated people to come in the U.S. and work.

If we ever seal the border and deport the illegals we can work on improving the temporary workers system. That would be more beneficial to the economy than undocumented workers occupying jobs.

America was built by immigrants. I'm all for immigration... legal immigration... and I don't care if they are rocket scientists or hardworking families looking for a better life. It's illegal immigrants I have a problem with... or more accurately, I have a problem with the fact that my government will not secure our borders and enforce its own immigration laws.

Last I heard the Obama administration was issuing work permits to foreigners at the insane rate of more than 150,000/month. If this was being done to allow in skilled workers which we had a shortage of, without Americans capable of doing the work, that would be understandable. Trouble is, foreign workers are being allowed in to scoop up jobs that Americans ARE capable of doing.

The director of the American Society of Black Engineers put it very succinctly. He said you when you have a labor shortage, wages go up. But they haven't been going up. They have gone down.
SO the idea that these skilled workers are needed is a pile of crap. They are "needed" for just one thing. To boost profits of the unscrupulous companies who hire them, taking advantage of the cheap labor, at the expense of the American workers.

FAIR's analysis is exactly correct, and is borne out by the facts.

As for the work permits being issued at this exorbitant rate, aren't many of these jobs unskilled ? - which could be given to American workers, who are unemployed (government claims 15 million ; others claim it's 31 million).

In my community, lots of people are working in "Day Labor" (physical work) at minimum wage, with temperatures here in central Florida in the mid-90s. In July and August, it will be even hotter, and they (Americans) will still be there.

The myth that Americans won't do the work that illegal aliens do was refuted years ago when a study was done of hundreds of American occupations. Among the findings:

Of the 465 civilian occupations, only four are majority immigrant. These four occupations account for less than 1 percent of the total U.S. workforce. Moreover, native-born Americans comprise 47 percent of workers in these occupations.

Many jobs often thought to be overwhelmingly immigrant are in fact majority native-born:
Maids and housekeepers: 55 percent native-born
Taxi drivers and chauffeurs: 58 percent native-born
Butchers and meat processors: 63 percent native-born
Grounds maintenance workers: 65 percent native-born
Construction laborers: 65 percent native-born
Porters, bellhops, and concierges: 71 percent native-born
Janitors: 75 percent native-born

It could be said that perhaps it is the immigrants who won't do the dirtiest and most dangerous jobs, which are being done almost exclusively by Americans - coal miners, US Army Corps of Engineers construction workers, firefighters, troops in Afghanistan.
