I have badly scratched my eyeglasses and I'm getting an exam for a new pair on Monday. I could actually use three: one for distance, one for reading and one for the computer. But I can still read if I hold the book close enough.

If you were me and could only get two sets, which would you choose? Do you think using distance eyeglasses to read the (desktop) computer is such a bad idea?

If $10 Walgreen glasses would solve your reading problem, I'd only get two pair -- and actually might consider just getting one for distance with a bifocal built-in for your computer. If, for some reason, my vision required three separate pair of prescription glasses, I'd have my eye exam...ask them what the best price was they could give me...and then shop around. I really think whoever is giving your exam can probably give you the best advice on the most economical (and logical) way to resolve your problem. If you're constantly having to keep three pairs of glasses herded? That's going to be a pain in the backside. Ha!

O, yes it is. But there are no alternatives. I can't tolerate bifocals and I can't see without glasses -- I have had really terrible sight all my life, and it's gotten much worse with age.

Progressive lenses won't work for you?

Thankfully, I'm just nearsighted to beat hell. I only need one pair of glasses, but I need them. Can't see the number of fingers on one hand at arm's length without them.

Wow, I've never heard of needing different glasses for different needs.

I've got pretty bad astigmatism, but only really need them to drive, I've got two pair, but their the same prescription.

Not everyone can wear bifocials, Your Star. They make me nauseous -- I can't train myself to look where I should for the task at hand.

I doubt there are many defects in sight a person who isn't legally blind can have that I've missed. Runs in my family.

When the kid was on her way, I prayed she wouldn't have my eyesight -- and she doesn't.

My mom accumulated all three which usually results in a great laugh as she runs around the house asking if we've seen her glasses, while she is wearing them on her face. :D

If you are only getting two, I'd go with distance and computer and get the reading glasses at Walgreens for $10.

Then you can get some chi-chi frames at the optometrist.

I can't read with drugstore reading glasses...there's too much wrong with my vision.

:(

But hell yes, it's fun to get new glasses, and hell yes, it's fun to try and keep track of them!

Bummer! That would be the ultimate solution. :p

I'd still go with the distance and computer glasses and take them off to read, since you can do that.

Good luck Pinkie. :)

I wear contact lenses for distance, and reading glasses for close-up. If you can tolerate contact lenses, I highly recommend them. I've worn them for most of my adult life, and once you get used to them, you'll probably love them. As for reading glasses, I just buy the cheapies from any place I can find a pair that I like. I look for anything that's different- color, frameless, or just plain. I probably have at least 30 pairs of them, because I love changing them out.

It's an old person thing.

As you age, your eyes lose their accomodation and ability to focus well at different distances away. About in the mid-late 40's, most of us discover that we can't read fine print anymore, then we notice that we can't read normal print anymore, so we go down to Walgreen's and pick up a pair of cheap readers with magnification. A few weeks ago, my charge nurse (a man who is a few years younger than me) was trying to read a memo, and he was complaining that he couldn't see it very well. I took off my readers and handed them to him, and he was amazed at how much they helped. Well, the next day, he asked if I had an extra pair he could borrow. The only extra pair I had with me were the pink plaid frames, and he politely declined.

Many in my family, including me, have that "Mr. MaGoo" thing going on.

LOL.

Why not laser correction? I can't speak for it myself, but it's fairly common and people seem to be happy with it.

I'm not a candidate, Risky. Thus far, there are limits as to the types of conditions they can correct.

However....I am in the early stages of cataracts and when they do that surgery, they replace the lenses with 20/20 ones, so at some point (if I live long enough, and my sight gets bad enough) I'll see as well as a fighter pilot.

Should be fascinating -- I never saw that well once in my life!

I plan on doing this eventually. Would love to be able to see the way I do with my glasses without them.

I very successfully used no line bifocals, one pair, for all three tasks.
