Maybe he is the man with no cards. A few months back, in an interview, Macron admitted that everything armaments related that France is producing this year is going to that Dien Bien Phu called Ukraine; hoping that the unfortunate President of Dien Bien Phu on the Black Sea will be understanding and not ask the impossible of him. The sanctions long ago lost their sting. The 17th package. 17th package? 17! That's insanity! Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. The 17th was rolled out with much fanfare but hardly made any waves. The 18th was stillborn. Sen Graham's bone crushers never took root, they remained the hallucinations of an aging neocon. But the most important card of all, the Joker in the Pack if you will, remained elusive.

Clearly Macron is a man with no cards. So why did he call Putin?

I think Macron realizes that the US piggy bank has mostly been put away and, since the European countries can't scrounge up enough money and warfighting material, the only thing left is to work toward an end to the matter.

As long as Macron, and the other EU country leaders, avoid putting the screws to Zelensky there won't be anything between Ukraine and Russia except death, destruction and waste of money.

Macron has all the cards. His call was just to verify the Putin does not want peace and that the EU is putting up billions of Euros to help Ukraine win and they will.

Macron can, and did speak for himself. He said he urged Putin to agree to unconditional ceasefire and negotiations. That is a different tune from the last few weeks when his statements were Russia must be forced to agree to a ceasefire. Now he is urging. What changed?

LOL Macron was using verbal force to keep reminding him that he needs to agree to a ceasefire. Like when Trump said "bad things will happen" except Macron is not a TACO like Trump.

Macron is counting on his vocal cords to do the trick :)?

Macron wanted to hear for himself that Putin STILL wants more war. That is what he told Zelensky who was not surprised at all. The good news about that is that a million more Russians might die by Ukrainian hands. Trump really wants that and that is why he is prolonging the war.

Macron said no such thing. Macron said his call was to urge Putin to agree to a ceasefire

Macron clearly is unaware of your good news. Else he wont have been screaming for a ceasefire these past months. The side wanting a ceasefire is the side getting hammered

Getting "hammered" and yet capturing nothing.

But the Russians are very good at murdering civilians, I'll give you that prop.

Not much has changed. Trump spoke with Putin on the phone too. He told him to declare a ceasefire. Putin said Nyet. Fox News no less lol,

Do you remember that Macron summoned business guys in his France and urged them NOT to speed up exit from Russia ? This talk as far as I remember took place in 2022.
It may be ridiculous to see that while everybody else has publicly ceased all activities in Russian Federation and sold their property to Russian businesses, French companies continue their business in Russia.
French and..... ???? American :)). Apple have forgotten to leave Russia.
Russia still have french retailer Auchan operating as usual, Leroy Merlin and I suspect some other companies.
Macron has much more to discuss with Winnie-the-Pooo (oh sorry:) Pootzine? Putler? )) ) then he's willing to tell to the press.

LOL Renault spent billions building a car plant in Russia and pulled out never to return. Russia is screwed and they will collapse in a year or so. There will never be any more foreign investment in a country filled with war criminals.

LOL yeah the Russians are really going to take notice when the big bad French start talking tough.

Macron has always had delusions of grandeur.

LOL It is not talk when the French pledge their entire weapons production of CAESAR howitzers to Ukraine.

France Commits All Its 2025 CAESAR Howitzer Production to Ukraine

French President Emmanuel Macron has pledged that all of the 2025 production of its CAESAR 155mm / 52 caliber howitzer will be supplied to Ukraine, according to a Tuesday report by the milblogger “French Aid to Ukraine” on X.

The CEO of the Franco-German company KNDS, the manufacturer of the CAESAR (Camion Équipé d’un Système d’Artillerie – Truck mounted artillery system) howitzers announced in March that annual production of the weapon had been quadrupled since Russia’s 2022 full-scale invasion. He said that by the year end more than 110 units would have been shipped to Ukraine.

Some analysts suggest that figure may be an underestimate. Around 70 units were assessed to have been delivered by the end of 2024. If Macron’s pledge is realized, the current monthly output of at least eight howitzers, as reported by the French news site La Tribune in April, means that at least another 100 will be received by Kyiv this year. Also in April, Le Monde reported that KNDS had diverted 90 percent of its production of replacement barrels for the CAESARs to Ukraine – such was the rate of wear being inflicted by the use of the system by Ukraine’s armed forces.

There is a difference. Trump has been clear that it is not his war, and wants out. Macron considers it his war; has not spoken to Putin since 2022; and along with Starmer and Merz has been vowing to ramp up sanctions and collapse Russia. It will seem to me like Macron had pinned himself into a corner where it has to be Putin coming to him hat in hand.

I do recall that.

I think Trump is very frustrated that Putin continues and intensifies the bombing. I think US aid to Ukraine would give trump leverage over Putin.

“We get a lot of bullshit thrown at us by Putin, [if] you want to know the truth, He’s very nice all the time, but it turns out to be meaningless.”

Well, that's very figurative and speculative and I'm not going down rabbit holes.

And what does leverage over Putin gain for Trump? He had long decided that that war was not US' war, why should he keep throwing billions of dollars in a war opinion is just about unanimous that Ukraine will not return lost territories?

So why did Macron call up Putin?

If US aid and intel is available to Ukraine it will mean more dead Russians. Not that he cares about them, but this makes it harder to lie about it. To him, this mainly delays his conquest of Ukraine.

So why did Macron call up Putin?

The news at the time was that both Trump and Macron called to ask him to call a ceasefire and start negotiations.

I didn't read any transcript or have any access to state conversations so I don't know any more than what was in the news.

NATO is never going to start a war with Russia. We can see this every day because Putin even invaded Ukraine and military forces from NATO members have not attacked inside Russian borders.

But it's a warm wet dream by our Putin water-carriers.
