And what does leverage over Putin gain for Trump? He had long decided that that war was not US' war, why should he keep throwing billions of dollars in a war opinion is just about unanimous that Ukraine will not return lost territories?
If US aid and intel is available to Ukraine it will mean more dead Russians. Not that he cares about them, but this makes it harder to lie about it. To him, this mainly delays his conquest of Ukraine.
AGAIN! What does leverage over Putin gain for Trump given that he had long decided that the war was not US'?
So why did Macron call up Putin?
The news at the time was that both Trump and Macron called to ask him to call a ceasefire and start negotiations.
I didn't read any transcript or have any access to state conversations so I don't know any more than what was in the news.
Trump's calls to Putin, and vice versa, has always been between the two. Trump never held a joint call to Putin with Macron. Trump has asked Putin for a ceasefire before; he did not get one; so Trump went his way. Trump did not take the position like you can compel a ceasefire if one, or all the parties at war do not want one.
Macron's position is more of an absurdity. All over the place: Russia cannot be allowed to win; Ukraine must have a path to Nato and EU; Ukraine cannot be allowed to lose; An armed European contingent must be allowed to enter Ukraine to stare down the Russians; A European airpower must impose a no fly zone over Ukraine in the face of Russian missiles...
With the vast array of what Macron wants he should be preparing for war, not calling up Putin
NATO is never going to start a war with Russia. We can see this every day because Putin even invaded Ukraine and military forces from NATO members have not attacked inside Russian borders.
A proxy war is still a war
