Correct. Democrats don't have a lot of leverage here, and I'm fine with them voting to keep the government open in exchange for a few small-to-medium-sized concessions (e.g. Medicaid or PEPFAR or IRS funding). But if Republicans want Dems to vote for a budget, then they'd better be prepared to give them *something*. If not, then Republicans have the majority in both houses of Congress and they can own the shutdown themselves.

When I was a kid, there were hundreds of bombings in the streets and college campuses of America, and we had the second crookedest President of our history. The country survived. Now we have the crookedest President in our history, but the civil violence is not there.
