'European democracy is under attack': Roberta Metsola addresses EU Parliament corruption scandal

Strong words, but true. The corruption scandal shows that MEPs can be bought. The European Parliament is the most democratic institution in the European Union, as in it's directly elected by the citizens of the Union. If they can't be trusted, who can? Qatar is most likely not the only country seeking influence through bribes. I hope they don't just consider this finsihed, shake some hands, and throw a few MEPs under the bus. This need not be dead and buried. They need to dig deeper, the corruption must be cleaned out. Metsola at least promise there will be no "seeping it under the carpet". I hope she's right. But my usual cynical me tells me she is wrong.

Countries like Qatar have been and will always be a problem.

And so will corrupt politicians in less 'problematic' countries that are on the take - that will also always be a problem. There's corruption in democratic, Western countries. I guess the main difference is that we have built institutions that, in theory, establish some accountability that's missing in more autocratic societies.

That's how democracy works, corruption exists nearly everywhere. That particular case is insignificant(zero actual damage caused by that bribe) and likely used to divert attention from far more serious stuff, like the secret vaccine contracts negotiated secretly by Von der Leyen, the switch from long term gas contracts to "spot" contracts, the sanctioning of Russia which causes great economic harm to the EU - all the corruption is done by the Americans and they're the only ones that benefit from all this insanity while the EU is committing economic suicide! They have a particular modus operandi, often using all sorts of NGOs with dual purpose, mixing apparently legitimate activities with subversive activities performed by the people employed/sponsored by the NGOs - from politicians to prosecutors, judges and who knows who else. Also, they tend to bribe and recruit people from the intelligence services of the host country, doing a lot of illegal stuff and hiding everything under the excuse of national security of both the host country and America.

No. It's America, the UK and a few other big Western countries that cause nearly all the real problems.

You need to stop hating Americans and the UK. Those intelligence agencies were created for a purpose and that was to counter the threat of the Stasi and the KGB. Now there are intelligence agencies from terrorist countries which must also be stopped.

Stop hating. Hate doesn't work.

Stasi and the KGB were saints compared to the CIA/FBI, Mi6/5 - which have employed some of the worst hyper-evil subhuman filth that the world has ever seen!

The terrorist countries are the United States and the United Kingdom. Purely terrorist countries that have invaded, killed and plundered for all their history! And that says a lot about the civilian populations of those countries - in the end it's the civilians that elected and supported the extremely murderous systems, even supported clearly illegal invasions, wars, coups, meddling and so on. That should worry you! Many people on this planet are extremely fed up with all this monstrous behavior of the USA and the UK. Guess who'll be deemed responsible one day? Being hated or not depends on the behavior of the people in question, which so far has been monstrous!

😆😆😆😆😆😆😆
The continuing failure of those who had the luxury of a neutral country to cast judgment.
And you guys are considering joining NATO now?
Do us a favor, if that's the majority opinion of Swedes....DON'T.

We managed okay without you all these years.
And now you may just get the chance to learn how nice the KGB really were, just change the letters...it's FSB now.

Shameful hate.

I bet you are a Russia sympathizer.

The FBI is not a spy agency. It's a federal police agency. You have no idea what you're talking about. Your support for Russia and East Germany is appalling and shameful.

I can no longer take you seriously.

YOU don't know what your talking about, you don't know what state institutions you have in your own country. Or perhaps you are just tasked to whitewash them online.

The FBI is a SPY agency that was also given some ordinary police powers. But make no mistake, it's part of the same evil crap just as the CIA and some other agencies, doing highly illegal stuff, not just snoop\ping, but often subversive activities, like these:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_FBI_controversies (no these are not mere controversies, but very serious criminal acts)
Oh, and they even commit criminal acts outside the country, just like the CIA:

No one should ever trust any allegation of crime made by the FBI, CIA or any American, British state institution! They are the biggest criminals on the planet! They very often fabricate evidence and very often try to impose extra-territorial jurisdiction, which is illegal and illegitimate from the outset. Each country decides what legal and what's not on its own territory not the terrorist state USA!

Stasi and KGB were not elected by any people, just like the Gestapo was not.

But all three did a magnificent job of suppressing their own populations to the point of murder.

It was also massive corruption that lead to Qatar hosting the football world cup.

That fossil fuel dictatorships have hade an corruptive influence for many decades. There this is yet another reason to transition away from fossil fuels.

The marketization and commodification of representatives has to end. We cant treat every damn thing like a market transaction.

European Chief Prosecutor requests the immunity of two Greek MEPs to be lifted over fraud suspicions

Well this means that besides Eva Kaili, fellow Greek MEP Maria Spyraki is one of the other MEPs implicated (maybe). While both are Greek MEPs they are from different parties and sits with different groups in the European Parliament, Eva Kaili represents PASOK in Greece and sits with the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats (S&D), while Spyraki represents Nea Demokratia in Greece, and sits with the European People's Party (EPP).

Though there seem to be confusion whether the Spyraki waiver has to do with this case or some other case altogether.

That´s a novel way of saying "we ****ed up"

Saints? Have you read what they also did or their descendants continue to do in Africa and other areas of the world?
