So in spite of their much stated (fact) of being self sufficient, it now seems that self sufficiency is not actually true.
Reminds me very much of the Soviet Union statements to their own people that Russia was able to feed itself, when in actual fact it was only by purchasing US Wheat in the 1980s that got them through a tough time with their failing agricultural system.

U can't NOT sell them wheat... extremely unhumanitarian not to. U can refuse to sell them weapons, but not food for their ppl...

I would agree with this...except one condition: that the Iranian government publically acknowledge that they are buying wheat from "The Great Satan -- the United States"...a supposed hateful, inhumane nation. Perhaps the Iranian people just need a bit of reminding.

There are US embargoes on Iran.

It's why we don't buy their oil.

It would need to be more than just US embargoes. Even with embargoes on Iranian oil, they just sell their oil to a country like Russia, who purchases that oil instead of some Saudi oil, which we then buy. It's just a shell game.

Although Iran is subject to a growing number of sanctions imposed by Western countries that want Tehran to suspend its nuclear enrichment program, these US grain exports, like those of medications, are "legal and encouraged," a State Department spokesman, Robert McInturff, told AFP.

They require authorization from the Treasury because of a law Congress approved in 2000, the Trade Sanctions Reform and Export Enhancement Act (TSRA), he noted.

"The idea of that in 2000 was to promote certain types of exports to sanctioned countries, so there would be food, medicine, agricultural products, medical products," McInturff said.

Wachovia's Nelson underscored the tense US-Iranian relationship for many years: "it is still surprising that they are buying wheat from the US instead of waiting to buy wheat from someone else."

Analysts noted that Tehran could have used an intermediary, like Syria, to import US wheat to avoid having the sale recorded in official data.

"Maybe the relationship between Iran and the US is not as terrible as it has been," Nelson said.

I think we should trade them a bushel of wheat for a barrel of oil.

...why are we selling them wheat?

For the same reason we offered to help them over their last devistating earthquake with no strings attached. We are not the monsters they wish their people to believe we are.

1) We offer to help them over their earthquake......they tell us no, but then turn around and offer to help us over Katrina if we would ease up on embargos.

2) We are labeled the "Great Satan," in which we reply with no demonic nickname for them.

3) We insist on peaceful co-existence between Muslims and Jews, they wish to annhilate Israel and preach hate.

4) We have spent billions on humanitarian aid throughout the world, they have spent a fortune on Hezbollah.

5) We see the Iranian culture within America, they refuse ours.

6) They call us names and label us the enemy of God, but Satan's wheat is acceptable. Perhaps Satan should evenly demand oil in exchange for food. Free trade and all.

Despite our critics in the West, there should never be any confusion about who and who is not a friend to this world. Were the Middle Eastern population not so religiously thick headed, we would have less critics in our own backyard. Ironic, no?

To be fair, I seem to remember labeling them the axis of...something. Was it "puppies and glitter"? Not sure. :2razz:

Oh yeah, the "axis of evil." But to be even more fair, this wasn't a title bestowed upon them thirty years ago and our civilization won't orchestrate an annual parade to that affect.

For a moderator to ACTUALLY be as ig****nt as the statement above shows you to be, this is an amazing statement.
RUSSIA is Self Sufficient in Oil, has been ever since the 1970s, actually exports near 40% of the Worlds current supply of Oil.
So, this begs the question, why would they want to purchase Iranian Oil?

1. Not sure why you think the mods would be smart, we're plenty dumb from time to time.
2. Not sure why you starred out "ignorant"
3. Yes, I'm aware that Russia doesn't need to import oil. I was making a point about how countries LIKE Russia (that are willing to deal with Iran despite US pressure) would be more than willing to act as go-betweens in grain purchases if Iran didn't want to purchase directly from the US. The choice of Russia and oil was an inapt example on my part.

My first thought was how do you have a drought in a desert?

It's a pretty large country, about the size of Alaska, and has about 10% arable land. Check out this slideshow and see a bit more. (If it weren't for the politics and religion, I'd love to check out the country...but those are two HUGE stopping points).
