Where is there a good place to purchase movies for download. I don't want to rent. I want to own what I download and start a digital movie library.

Not interested in the illegal downloads... so any of you all have experience in purchasing movie downloads? If so, from where and why do you recommend it over others?

I know of a couple but don't know what the pluses and minuses are for such sites.

I'm interested in this as well, Rob. I started a thread at the other place, expressing interest in a way to download digital copies of movies onto a hard drive, much in the way that a DVR works, where you can just like scroll up and down and pick out a movie to watch, instead of buying a DVD, and throwing it away once it gets scratched up. I know that one could buy a massive hard drive, but what would be a good way to hook it up to the TV, and pull from the HD?

I use a boxee box and you can keep pics, vids and whatever on a NAS (Network Area Storage) which is just a little box that has two hard drives in it. I use it for backing up all my computers and storing all my pics and stuff on it. You can use a boxee box to access those two hdd's on the NAS and make your NAS a big movie library and watch the movies on your tv through the boxee box. I absolutely love that thing.

The boxee box is hardware that you have to buy, however the boxee software is free. If you have a spare computer laying around you can put boxee software on it and use it to store your movies on and plug it into your tv with an HDMI cable.

Hm. And you are only limited by the size of the HDD that you put inside it? Or does it come with it's own HDD? That sounds great. But how easy is it to access the movies? I have 4 HDMI cables on the back of my TV - would it work that way? Just change the input with the TV remote?

The NAS is just storage. You buy it and then you have to buy the hdd's you put in it and therefore it is only limited by the size of the HDD's you put in it. After you get the NAS you need the movie viewing software. If you get a boxee box, it has Netflix on it and it also has a way to view the movies on the NAS.

My NAS is plugged into my router. So the entire network can see whatever is on the NAS. Laptops, tower computers, smart phones... you name it. So I can use my computer in bed to wifi and watch movies on my NAS when I download them. Then you plug your boxee into the router as well (even though it is wifi as well so you don't have to wire it in if you don't want to) then you plug your boxee into your TV with an HDMI.

I can also use my boxee to see and view pics and vids on any computer in the house that is on. So you can get a Vudu movies account and buy movies, download them to your computer and then have your boxee play your downloaded movie on your tv from your computer's hdd. I prefer to have the NAS to play it off of because like I said, I use it as a backup for all my computer's anyway.

Now when I upgrade my laptop's OS (like I did today) I don't care about losing info because I keep it all backed up on my NAS. I install the new Operating System and just pull all those docs off my NAS and it's all good to go.

I will send that link to my husband. I have way too many DVDs and would love to downsize, yet still have my collection. Plus I think it might work for our other tvs as well, as we are all on the "whole house system" through U-verse. One receiver, and the other 3 leech off of it.

I'm starting to research ripping my DVDs so that I can make them digital and put them on my NAS. Don't know what software to use just yet.

Check out he user rights for Amazon. I would not in any way recommend iTunes, because unless I am currently mistaken, the FairPlay Drm is far too restrictive and is more restricted than FairPlay DRM was for music. I would prefer you be able to burn the files to disc if you were not directly able to transcode the file into another format on the spot.

Do not worry. I won't be touching anything mac. I'd love to find and purchase from a site that downloads *.ogg file type movies.

all downloads are illegal in america unless you pay or the site pays for rights, even though odds are you wont get caught unless you are a mass distributor, there is still a risk.

there are sights however that run in foreign countries that let you watch movies free with either commercials or adds, these are sites sopa and pipa tried to block, but they failed because copyright doesnt apply in countries where those rules doent exist, and the government cant stop you from viewing the internet, just from illegaly downloading and purchasing from the internet.

You can purchase movies to download. Vudu movies who hooked up with Walmart is one. Amazon is another. Just want to know what else legal is out there.

I'm not aware of an OGG video container or a Vorbis video codec. Anyhow the iTunes store would have been fine if they has the same usage rights as the audio DRM that used to exist on the store front. Because with that you foul have at least burned he files to disc. With the last time I checked thy hadnt changed their incredibly restricted "ownership" rights which was absolutely ludicrous.

For the most part we aren't downloading films for ownership. But there is also Vudu. I am currently in an area of the country that makes it difficult to do much research for you, by I might. Look into that.

For the most part the emphasis is on membership services or a la cart rentals, but not ownership.

That's the pain. Someone will break the ice less they want their **** to keep getting stolen due to lack of reasonable choice.

I'm keeping an eye on redbox. They are now moving to compete with Netflix in online streaming and have hooked up with a partner in Verizon. Apple will code their **** so that only an apple hardware product will be able to play it. That's how they operate. That's why I hate them so.

I am okay with redbox and approve of some of their moves-namely rejecting, I think Warner Bros. in their attempt to extend the wait period before releasing new titles. They are instead buying their own copies of the titles and releasing them I think the day of release. However, I think their selection will bring in a different clientele than the others, and to me, not the best of titles. They are more recent than Netflix, but I see bad titles more than I see decent ones.

Blockbuster is selling movies too. I've got a lot to check into. I was just being lazy in trying to make you all do the research for me.

My, my, my... it is terribly fun whitewashing this here picket fence. lol

Perhaps, but that poor company can't get hold of a business model to save their lives.

That's why I sometimes used them to buy previewed Blu-ray titles. Otherwise I wouldn't use them.

you can download movies, but they are paid for one way or another.

i used to download ovies from a site, the movies were paid for by the hosting company, and that company made money by putting adds in them, usually at the beginning and at the 50% mark

I just loved how they were such the bully big dog raping people with their monopolistic(ish) late fees then all the sudden this nobody called netflix grows up and bends them over the barrel.

Not only that but their rental prices made little sense, even with local competition. During their last years as a store, their selection wasn't that spectacular and yet they also felt the need to charge more than everyone else for the same product.

Vudu and Amazon.

Vudu has an awesome service, through Walmart, where you can digitize your dvd's, that you already own.
They are forever available on Vudu and can even be upgraded to HD.

Both services offer, before theatrical release of movies, for a premium too.

I used to be a TSM for Movie Gallery, and know all about failing business models  . We fought with Blockbuster for Hollywood Video and unfortunately won. We won $1.1B in bad debt, and just as the ink was still dry on the paperwork, the bottom of the business started falling out. Netflix and then Redbox killed the brick and mortar stores, and eventually, live streaming will kill them.

Also, I love seeing Blockbuster going out. They were so nasty when Movie Gallery finally went under, snarky, and now they are going too. It's inevitable. My local Blockbuster had been there for years, and closed a few months ago. It was a nice store, clean, well-run. The manager had been there for 9 years. I know it was making alot of money, and was a model store in the district. And they closed. If that store closed, then it's not just the negative cash-flow stores that are closing. It's ALL of them. Just a matter of time.

I will say that I got some really good buys on Blurays when the store went out of business.
