Does Trump Really Think He Can Win A Trade War With China? (1 Viewer)

U.S. inflation will likely rise this year, which will not only hurt American living standards but possibly cause the Federal Reserve to go slow on lowering interest rates, prolonging the misery.

That misery is hitting Main Street. Whereas Chinese President Xi Jinping doesn’t have to worry about midterm elections, congressional Republicans do. Mr. Trump’s approval rating is plunging alongside the stock market, and if he leads his party to defeat next year he’ll become a lame duck president. When the cameras and microphones are on, Republicans are standing by him; when they’re off, they’re getting antsy. There’s only so much of this they can take.

China, meanwhile, can absorb a fair bit of punishment. The country has extremely low inflation and a huge savings rate, amounting to nearly half of total output. If the government reorients a mere tenth of those savings to consumption, by raising wages or boosting spending, it could make up for all lost sales to America. And unlike the Fed, China’s central bank can increase liquidity in the banking system and thereby reduce interest rates without fretting that inflation will spin out of control.

Maybe.....Maybe Not.....Who Knows!
But there's one thing I do know.....You're hoping (maybe even praying) for Trump to lose.

And another thing I know is that the US is China's #1 Cash Cow and Tariff/Trade Sucker.
I totally agree that Xi Jinping doesn't have any worries about any silly ole "elections".(it's a commie thing)
However; Xi does have to keep the Chinese Communist Party happy and its People's Liberation Army well-funded to remain on target to surpass The USA; China's adversary and #1 global superpower.

Trump has interrupted their schedule for world domination and forced them to rethink their priorities.
The CCP must now decide to either take their toys and go home or smile and play The Trump Game.
Poor-Poor China
...forty years of pampering has created a spoiled brat, unaccustomed to such a dilemma.

I don't think donalds trying to win a trade war.
The evidence leads one to assume he's attempting to collapse the US dollar

So, Trump's trade war started in his first administration, it's just continuing with a new set of parameters after nothing moved in either direction since then (I'm including Biden's involvement, or lack thereof). I do believe Trump believes he can win, but I don't think he understands that no one is really going to win with this disastrous tariff plan of his.

He won't win because there really isn't much of a plan. Just like when he started all of this in his first term. He is playing a level of brinkmanship with folks who are better at it than he is, but his ego won't let him accept that. He relied on intimidation and threats...not understanding his opponent, not willing to understand and believing too much of his own hype. Once his "plan" backfired, he didn't, and currently doesn't, know what to do. He is allowing his ego to guide him into disaster.

As I write this, my mind went to the Battle of Gettysburg and the repeated attacks at St. Mayre's Heights where Burnside should've stopped, regrouped and rethought his plan, but didn't. Like a dog with a bone he ordered charge after charge, at one point 3000 Union soldiers were killed in one hour. Burnside couldn't let it go, and thousands suffered for his folly.

It seems to me that Trump is currently acting like Burnside: he can't let it go, or at the very least, come up with a better strategy...and we are all suffering for it.

devaluing the dollar is sort of a piece that fits in the puzzle (import prices rise, exports more competitive) but causing it by a fleeing from the dollar/bonds? Was that the plan, by scaring investors? I thought the idea was to attract investment. It's like the the tariff idea itself, reshoring won't work unless the tariffs are locked in, but he has already called his bluff by pausing most of them. Its all Don just winging it with a worse group around him this time around. None of it makes sense, most of it is contradictory/counterproductive.

China seems to be willing to take the hit.

Also, nobody is going to invest serious capital if the tariff situation changes every week.

Donald says his "policies" are going to do one thing. But all the logic and evidence points to it doing something else entirely.
It's almost as if he's deliberately wrecking the economy and the dollar along with it.

It is as if he is operating on his stated vengeance/dictator (for a day!) when it comes to the judiciary/DOJ/law firms and immigration, but the whole Muskrats chewing thru the wires of the IRS, eliminating field offices....why would anyone think that the US is going to meet its obligations? There was talk of the WH devising ways to "cancel" certain bonds held by China et al. That just creates all kinds of confidence in the US as an investment vehicle.

Okay, they managed to find a way to be more stupid than they were with the tariffs.

The value of our dollar (or any fiat currency for that matter) rests on the good credit and good name of the country that manufactures it.
Donalds wrecking both.

This, right here, sums up this entire timeline.

Yes, weakening the US, the opposite of his entire rhetoric. Watch what he does, ignore what he says.
It's all Manchurian to me.

Wouldn't it be bizarre if life is imitating art, and donald is a real life Manchurian candidate.

China is the one issuing demands to the Trump Administration. We are less than 15% of their exports, and they can replace what they buy from us that they need.

China is a strong US supplier because American consumers love and demand their cheap shit.
They don’t force us to buy that shit.
I also know that you don’t understand simple economics.

Wrong
China is the one reciprocating as the sex offender is imposing tariffs. Pay attention!
The felon started a fight he’s going to lose badly. Unfortunately it’s ordinary Americans who will pay the price for his stupidity as Powell correctly pointed out.

I think you may have quoted the wrong post.
