Understand that slavery in the Bible was not the same as it was in our country

1. God Did Not Establish Slavery but Regulated it a. In other words just as there are laws on murder, divorce and theft (all things God clearly does not condone), God also knew the hearts of people were evil and had to establish laws to regulate slavery to ensure that slaves were treated properly. b. Actually the exact opposite is true. God only creates laws to regulate evil not good.

2. The Purpose of Slavery a. The purpose of slavery in the Bible was the help the poor survive. b. This is the exact opposite of what our country practiced for nearly 400 years. This leads…

3. In the Hebrew culture slavery was primarily volitional – Lev. 25:39 a. The most common way a person became a slave was if they were in debt. They would either sell themselves or their children’s services to pay off the debt – Lev. 25:39 b. Others would choose to be slaves to have all of their basic needs met by their master. These are called “bondservants” – Exodus 21:5-6. This leads to the next point which is…

4. Kidnapping was outlawed and punishable by DEATH – Ex. 21:16 (see also 1 Tim. 1:10) – Taking someone against their will and making them your slave was against the law and the will of God.

5. Slavery was limited to 6 years – Ex. 21:2 a. It was never God’s will for the rich to overtake the poor. b. On the contrary this system allowed for people to work off their debt in a safe and loving environment. However, after 6 years the slave would go free and the master was commanded to give something to them and send them on their way which is contrasted to what our country practiced. This leads me to my sixth point…

6. Slave masters were to treat slaves with respect a. They were commanded to treat them as “employees” and not as slaves – Lev. 25:39. b. If they killed their slaves they themselves would face punishment – Ex. 21:20 c. One of the ways to do this was to maintain the family unit which is a principle slave owners in America violated – Lev. 25:41; Ex. 21:3 d. Finally, a master was buying the services not the servant. God was very clear that no man can “own” another man because we were created in God’s image and everyone belongs to God – Lev. 25:55.

7. Slavery was not based on race – Nowhere in the Bible does it condone enslaving a race of people only individuals on a voluntary basis.

So, does the Bible make concessions for and have laws that regulate the practice of slavery? I’d have to say yes it does. Does it support the degradation and mistreatment of slaves as was practiced in our country? NO it does not.

"In other words just as there are laws on murder, divorce and theft (all things God clearly does not condone), God also knew the hearts of people were evil and had to establish laws to regulate slavery to ensure that slaves were treated properly."

What a bunch of nonsense.

Why did not God also then establish laws to regulate murder, divorce and theft?

Should not those laws all be the same?

Or theft and divorce, in God's opinion, is "worse" than slavery?

It does actually and allows purchasing of slaves and allows tricking hebrew slaves into being a slave for the rest of their lives. He also established that certain people are a ok to enslave others but pulls a double standard in practically every way.

No poor society can afford to buy slaves. Slavery cannot be regulated to make it good. The only moral answer to slavery is abolition. This makes humanity today more ethical than jehovah.

Are all laws the same?

So, your God justifies slavery. lol

Is that one of the reasons you obey and spread the word of your God? You also justify slavery?
If I've learn one thing, it's that the religion an individual picks is a reflection of themselves, not the other way around. They identify with it's teachings. It says a lot about a person.

What's with all these threads recently doing competitive Olympics grade mental gymnastics to construct slavery apologia?

"Oh well they actually sold themselves into slavery so..."

"and the slavery wasn't based on race...

"and it you think about it was actually a good thing that helped the poor and..."

NO. Wtf? SLAVERY. IS. BAD. Debt peonage is BAD. Being forced to sell yourself or your children into slavery do to poverty IS BAD.

If you have a question about the morality of slavery instead of asking your little book or the sky just ask me. Anytime 24/7. I'll let you know if slavery is still bad or not.

No in fact there are different laws regarding hebrew and heathen slaves. JW dont really like to bring that one up.

Excuse me? Ten Commandments much. "Thou shall not kill." "Thou shall not covet."

I believe you will find in the Old Testament precisely the idea of law regarding things like murder, theft, the treatment of spouses, etc.

However, as the "The Beat" presenter clearly pointed out one can make of the Bible what one wants by taking passages of it out of context. Just as one can do of just about anything else.

Yes it did, and you don't get to explain it away with "it was another time in another country!"
The Bible does not support slavery. There is a book in there called Exodus that you might want to glance at.

You mean the Exodus of one set of people from enslavement by another set of people, so they could subsequently enslave yet a third set of people?

What a bunch of nonsense.

Indeed, the same supposed God who supposedly insisted that people be put to death for having buttsex, couldn't bring himself to punish people AT ALL for owning other human beings.
