Understand that slavery in the Bible was not the same as it was in our country
1. God Did Not Establish Slavery but Regulated it a. In other words just as there are laws on murder, divorce and theft (all things God clearly does not condone), God also knew the hearts of people were evil and had to establish laws to regulate slavery to ensure that slaves were treated properly. b. Actually the exact opposite is true. God only creates laws to regulate evil not good.
2. The Purpose of Slavery a. The purpose of slavery in the Bible was the help the poor survive. b. This is the exact opposite of what our country practiced for nearly 400 years. This leads…
3. In the Hebrew culture slavery was primarily volitional – Lev. 25:39 a. The most common way a person became a slave was if they were in debt. They would either sell themselves or their children’s services to pay off the debt – Lev. 25:39 b. Others would choose to be slaves to have all of their basic needs met by their master. These are called “bondservants” – Exodus 21:5-6. This leads to the next point which is…
4. Kidnapping was outlawed and punishable by DEATH – Ex. 21:16 (see also 1 Tim.
1:10) – Taking someone against their will and making them your slave was against the law and the will of God.
5. Slavery was limited to 6 years – Ex. 21:2 a. It was never God’s will for the rich to overtake the poor. b. On the contrary this system allowed for people to work off their debt in a safe and loving environment. However, after 6 years the slave would go free and the master was commanded to give something to them and send them on their way which is contrasted to what our country practiced. This leads me to my sixth point…
6. Slave masters were to treat slaves with respect a. They were commanded to treat them as “employees” and not as slaves – Lev. 25:39. b. If they killed their slaves they themselves would face punishment – Ex. 21:20 c. One of the ways to do this was to maintain the family unit which is a principle slave owners in America violated – Lev. 25:41; Ex. 21:3 d. Finally, a master was buying the services not the servant. God was very clear that no man can “own” another man because we were created in God’s image and everyone belongs to God – Lev. 25:55.
7. Slavery was not based on race – Nowhere in the Bible does it condone enslaving a race of people only individuals on a voluntary basis.
So, does the Bible make concessions for and have laws that regulate the practice of slavery? I’d have to say yes it does. Does it support the degradation and mistreatment of slaves as was practiced in our country? NO it does not.
