Not wanting to derail the thread, I've never felt the term "African American" (AA) was appropriate anyway. Not all blacks are African, and not all Africans are black.
For example, I have heard some refer to people such as Mel B from the Spice Girls as AA. She's not American, she's British.
Putting aside the 'American' aspect for a moment, how about the 5th generation white farmer in Zimbabwe? Is he African? He's not black, he's white. If he were to emigrate to the US would he be legitimately categorized as AA? Why not? He knows nothing European. How many generations is required before somebody is considered from a particular area?
