Does 100% safe sex exist?

On the prostitution advocacy thread, it is argued that prostitution is no different from any other business or job, and accordingly can be made both legal and entirely safe.

Is it? There are no legal jobs where a person can knowingly be exposed to diseases UNTIL there is a certain way to protect the employee. For example, employees who work with diseases in a way they could be infected in how they do so are required to wear full hazmat suits, their licensing is VERY strict, and the requirements for safety of the facility also intense.

Legalize prostitution would be the ONLY profession legalizing employees knowing being exposed to both diseases - including deadly diseases - and diseases that can be transmitted to other people, including transmitted without sex, such as TB and hepatitis. Even HIV/AIDS can be transmitted without sex in various ways.

Is there such a thing as 100% safe sex and does the number of stranger sex partners increase the likelihood of contracting a disease? Should the government obtain tax revenue by taking a cut off off of legalizing the spreading diseases?

100% safe sex can be achieved but it requires 11.4 miles of saran wrap, a 5 gallon bucket of antibacterial soap, hip waders and 3 chickens.

Most folks aren't really into it but there is a website, a few underground clubs and an independent film on the subject which is supposed to come out next year.

It is like being a nurse or doctor. You wear the gear and wash the hands. Some get infected.some die. Most don't. But here in Germany about 8 times more patients die of multi resistant bacteria picked up in hospitals than contract aids.

Do you think this should apply to all employment? That 2 adults, or a company and employer, can decide upon any risk the employee is willing to take?

Do you think OSHA should be eliminated because employee safety is just a matter between employer-employee?

Not even related. Some jobs are more inherently riskier than others. OSHA is about minimizing risk in the workplace. A coal miner is signing up for a riskier job than a secretary. It's still the duty of the coal mining company to reduce that risk by complying with safety standards. The same would be the situation with prostitution.

It is related as the risk is communicable diseases. Nor does OSHA take a percentage of the coal miner's risk, does it?

At least recognize what it is. I also think it is important that the thread has MOSTLY evolved to advocacy of Nevada style brothels and corporate escort services. Do you think that is an accurate depiction of - for the most part - the evolution of those 2 other threads?

Yes, I would like to change the poll to add to different options. First, a simple "No." They other would be something about believing the net result is less spreading of diseases.

What is disregarded is that STDs (what people call STDs) are not the only diseases spread by the closeness of sexual activities.

Not sure what your point is regarding the first sentence or what your seconds sentence means.

The fact is, there are dangerous jobs out there and people choose those jobs, usually better pay. Alaskan fisher man, drilling for oil, coal miner, police officer etc. Those are all jobs where actually performing the job is risky. Prostitution would be a risky field to enter.

OSHA (if prostitution was legal) would have regulations to minimize that risk...drug tests, use of protection etc.

Y'know what the most dangerous job is in the US? Roofing. It's got a fatality rate of 34.7 per 100,000. Should we ban people from roofing jobs until we make it safer?

Any job can result in a form of harm. The real question is how great are the risks, can they be mitigated, and how much. Since prostitution is decriminalized in Nevada (or is it legalized? I forget), we can use them as a case study to measure the risks and efficacy of regulations.

Again, look at Nevada. It won't be perfect, since there is surely sex tourism involved, but it might give you a decent idea.

No, there is no such thing as 100% safe sex but there are reasonable precautions that both parties can take to minimize the risks to levels comparable or below those taken by people who eat in public eating establishments (for example).

Didnt see one in your poll choices. At least the part in bold could have been added if there was any objectivity involved in it's creation.

With strangers? No, I don't believe so. You have no idea who they've been with, what their history is, what they've been exposed to, or any other piece of information upon which trust can be built. Imo, it's absolutely insane to have sex with a stranger. Maybe that makes me old-fashioned, but I'd rather be the way I am, without STD's or unwanted kids, than "hip" and taking that chance.

To the bolded - the number of partners is what increases the likelihood. Not whether you know them or not. 1 partner = 1 means of exposure.
