Dr. William Haseltine didn’t mince words about the embrace of “herd immunity” as a solution to the coronavirus pandemic — by advisers to President Donald Trump — calling it “another word for mass murder.”

On Wednesday morning’s edition of CNN’s New Day, anchor John Berman brought Dr. Haseltine in to discuss the prospect of a “winter surge” of the coronavirus as the weather gets colder.

“No states in decline, professor, 50,000 cases reported in the last 24 hours, hospitalizations at a level we have not seen since the end of August,” Berman said. “We’ve been worried about this possible winter surge. It’s not even a month into fall and we’re seeing this alarming increase. So what does that tell you?”

“It tells us that we don’t have this pandemic, this epidemic under control,” Haseltine said, then volunteered “And I’m extremely concerned that the president is being advised by people who speak of herd immunity.”

“Herd immunity is another word for mass murder,” he continued. “That is exactly what it is. If you allow this virus to surprise as they are advocating, we are looking at two to six million Americans dead. Not just this year, but every year. The reason for that is that there is no such thing as herd immunity.”

Dr. Haseltine is an extremely respected voice and has been at the forefront of medical research. When a man like William Haseltine is of the opinion that 'herd immunity' means that more that 3 million people in the US will die before that is achieved, I will take his word for it.

And, if he is reelected, his republican machine will be more powerful than it has ever been and there will be no stopping him, no removing him, no impeaching him. If republicans hold onto the Senate, and with a majority conservative Supreme Court, there's nothing that will stop Trump or the republicans from a complete and total, irreversible, long-lasting bastardization of our democracy.

On most of his points I agree, but I do have to take issue with him on "herd immunity". There IS such a thing, and it occurs once a disease has killed off 100% of those that it is capable of killing off. At which point the disease no longer has any hosts which it can sicken to the point of death.

Of course, generally speaking, by the time that "Disease A" has reached that point it has spawned "Disease A ver. 2.0", "Disease A ver. 2.1", "Disease A ver. 2.2", "Disease A ver. 2.3", "Disease A ver. 2.4", "Disease A ver. 2.5", "Disease A ver. 2.6", "Disease A ver. 2.7", "Disease A ver. 2.8", "Disease A ver. 2.9", "Disease A ver. 3.0", "Disease A ver. 3.1" .....

The human race developed "Herd Immunity" to Bubonic Plague AFTER it had killed off 30–50 percent of the European population, between 1347–1351. That's a death toll of about 10% per year so, by extension, the US would be looking at around 33,100,000 deaths per year for four years in order to develop "Herd Immunity".

In short, "Herd Immunity" is NOT the benign thing that "Claque Trump" would like to believe it is and anyone who advocates it as "The Final Solution to the Covid Problem" IS, indeed, advocating "mass deaths".

I don't believe Trump is concerned about anything which doesn't directly benefit him-including the economy. It isn't as if he's going to die a pauper so, given ample precedent, I suggest that everything he says and does is geared solely toward winning the election.

What do people not get? Let it run rampant....look at NYC. Clearly it hit harder there because of the congestion and travel between major metro areas....but still.....if folks want to understand what the path to herd immunity looks like ....that is it. Transit employees, hospital personnel, first responders, and assorted essential workers dropping like flies. Hospitals over run and affecting the other patients that are admitted. Even if you have a separate "covid hospital" and screen patients in the clean hospital - it is beyond naïve to think in the case of a pandemic such as ours that the "clean hospital" would remain covid free.

Also, keep in mind....8 months into it, we still do not have enough PPE (specifically the N95s) that help keep the staff safe.

Trump doesn’t have the constraint of love for other people or shame at a particular behavior that 99% or 98% of the population has at least some measure of. And in a world in which he simply wants to dominate, that gives him an enormous advantage.

Like dictators across the world, he may fear prosecution over his financial affairs if he leaves office and this is making him even more determined to cling to power. With the release of his taxes and the prospect that he would be indicted even greater than it was before, he doesn’t really have a place where he’s safe other than being president.

This means that at least half of America, or over 160 million people, would have to get the virus. At least 1.6 million of whom would die.

Mr Trump claimed a $70,000 tax deduction for haircuts.

The courts have previously ruled that a person - not even if they are a media superstar - can claim "personal grooming" such as haircuts as a tax deduction.

This is slightly more than "tax avoidance" it is downright lying on the income tax form.

Mr. Trump MIGHT not "die a pauper", but it is starting to look like his current situation with regard to state paid and provided accommodation, clothing, transportation, food, entertainment, and medical care just might last well beyond 2024.

I calculate a mortality rate for closed cases by dividing the number of reported deaths by the sum of the number of reported deaths and the number of reported 'recovered' cases. Strangely enough, if you adjust the mortality rate for ALL cases by the rate of closure of cases, there is practically a 1 :: 1 relationship to the mortality rate for closed cases.

Since I don't make any adjustments to what the current data trends show in order to account for "historical patterns", I don't consider that the PROJECTIONS of current data are either "optimistic" or "pessimistic".

The current PROJECTION is that the number of COVID-19 deaths in the US will be between 312,494 and 345,389 during calendar year 2020 and will be approximately 328,942 in the 365 days following the date of the first known death from COVID-19 in the US.

I never said that that was what YOU said.

However that is what you get when you calculate a mortality rate using ONLY "total deaths" and "total cases" since the unstated assumption is that 100% of the active cases will survive. Using a "Mortality Rate (Closed)" gives a much more realistic picture of the actual rate at which people are dying.
