Maybe I am asking too much.
But I want to see real changes, definite improvement, serious reform.
I see none of this..
They are overpaid and under accomplished.
Election reform : the Representatives should have 4 year terms
Taxpayer paid, but very limited campaigns.
No more buying an election.

Excellent point, earthworm.

Of course, I doubt it will happen, as the people who would make that change are the ones whom it would most effect.

But the people who vote can do the same thing, by voting for another candidate after 4 years.

The problem is, in some cases, the new face is worse than the old one.

My stance in the upcoming elections is to vote against the incumbent, regardless of party affiliation. Voters in a nearby county just rid themselves of one embarassment ~ Congresswoman McKinney ~ much to the relief of folks across the nation. May her defeat be an inspiration to the voting public in all areas this November.

Just remember one thing my frriends.....If your a Conservative or a Moderate and you usually vote Republican as I do if you think its bad now then vote for a liberal democrat............

You want tax increases instead of tax cuts.........you will get them
You want Liberal activist judges on the bench.......You will get them
You want terrorist attacks.......You will get them
You want Gay Marriage.............You will get it
You want restrictions on the second amendment.......You will get them
You want taxpayer money poured into failed programs? You will get it......

I could go on and on.........

I will vote to re elect my Congressman who is a democrat.......

I agree that conservatives should vote for Democrats in the upcoming elections, but it has nothing to do with one side keeping their campaign promises IMO.

When the White House and Congress are controlled by opposing parties, there is more gridlock and government doesn't grow as fast. When they're controlled by the same party (regardless of which one), they tend to egg each other on and give themselves even more taxpayer money.

If the ultimate goal of conservatism is to shrink the size of the federal government, vote for a Democrat this fall.

I live in Pennsylvania.

Currently, there is one Senator up for re-election.

From this website: http://www.uselections.com/pa/pa.htm

I copied the following information about the persons running for that position:

U.S. SENATORS:

Rick Santorum (R)

Active Candidates:

Bob Casey Jr. (D)
State Treasurer, Ex-Auditor General, Attorney, '02 Governor Candidate
Carl J. Romanelli (Green)
Consultant, State Party Chair
Carl Edwards (Constitution)
Ex-GOP State Committeeman & Conservative Activist
Tom Martin (Libertarian)
Software Engineer & Frequent Candidate
I find myself having to make a decision between the Republican candidate and the Libertarian candidate. Tough choice.

However, that does not address the question about the re-election of my congressman.

From the same site linked above, here is more info:

U.S. CONGRESS:

District 19:
Todd Platts (R)

Active Candidates:

Phil Avillo Jr. (D)
Ex-York School Board President, College Professor & Vietnam War Veteran
Derf Maitland (Green)
Bookseller

From what I gather, these are the choices I have for my congressman.

I'm going to have to vote for the incumbent.

I don't trust the other two.

And from what I have read, This Todd Platts is the kind of congressman I would want throughout congress.

Anyone else from PA disagree?

I'm not from PA, but I find Rick Santorum to be just awful. One of the most vile members of the US Senate, and that's really saying something. He's happy to wear the conservative badge when it helps him, but consistently votes for bigger government.

I don't know if Bob Casey will be any better, but he can't possibly be much worse. I'll relish Santorum's landslide defeat. :)

The question isn't whether my congressperson has "done enough" but what he has done. He has voted for pass-the-buck policies -- tax cuts and more spending -- that have added almost $3 trillion to the national debt since 2001, and committed his full support behind a war that was undisputably based on a mistake.

It's not a question of whether he's done enough. He's done way too much.

I guess you did not read the line about failed social programs.....

I wouldn't be too sure about that landslide thing.

But I'm leaning towards the Libertarian candidate, so I might help your wish along.

It really has to stick in the craws of the democrats to support Bob Casey who is almost as Conservative as Santorum...............

You do know that by voting for the Libertarian candidate you are helping to elect the democrat........

I am originally from Western Pa., Altoona to be exact and my relatives tell me this race is a lot closer then Democrats want to admit and they say Santorum has really gained a lot of momentum...............There was a debate on meet the Press on Sunday and Santorum really handed Casey his lunch.....

Yes, I know. And that's why am only leaning towards the Libertarian candidate.

I have to make a choice between my fear of the huge problems that will happen if Bob Casey is elected, and my political points of view which pull me towards voting for the Libertarian candidate, Tom Martin.

As far as I know, your information is correct.

Not sure about the debate however.
But I can wish that the Libertarian would win....

decent poll
poor thread
too many congressmen for a coherent discussion

Well Matthews was just talking to a couple of Liberals about the debate on Hardball and they both said it was a tie so that tells me Santorum won big time.........

Well you have to take into consideration that I got the poll from the CNN web site.....;)

Or at least won......but good point.

I don't have any illusions that the government will get smaller with the Democrats in control of Congress, but at least the growth will (hopefully) slow down somewhat because of the gridlock.

As for social programs, you are quite right that most of them are failures. But when Republicans control the entire government, they abandon their small government principles and pass their OWN abominations like the prescription drug benefit and No Child Left Behind. Maybe a few years in the political wilderness will do them good.

Santorum is very pro-government, so he's no conservative in my book. Bob Casey, to the best of my knowledge, has never told a national reporter his fantasies about bestiality, so he's already one step ahead of Rick Santorum. ;)

I was going over their voting records. While I wasnt particurally impressed, no one better is running up against them.

Since I am retired I don't have to pay for my prescription drugs but I have friends that do and they tell me that the costs for their prescription drugs has been cut in half under the new medicare prescription drug bill.......

I will tell you something sometimes in a very weak moment I almost wish the dems would take over the congress so I can bitch and complain about everything they try to do but then I come to my senses and realize that is not a good idea...........

I could never get use to kissing the corrupt Germans and French asses.......

What's your point? It's another massive socialist welfare program that will ultimately fail and contribute to our ballooning government. Are you saying that you support this monstrosity, just after you finished talking about how social programs tend to fail? I wonder why...

You're missing the point. If one party controls Congress and the other party controls the White House, there is less of a potential for government to expand. People should bitch about almost everything Congress does, because 99% of the time they make government BIGGER.

Gridlock is good. If the Democrats were in the majority in Congress and they had proposed that prescription drug plan, Bush would have almost certainly vetoed it under heavy pressure from the GOP. If the Democrats had the White House, the Republicans in Congress would never have even let that bill see the light of day.

Only when one party controls both the legislature and the executive is there enough cronyism to allow such a terrible bill to become law.

George Bush has been doing quite a bit of that lately.

I am saying that no matter how much in their talking points they put the prescription drug program down that it has been a huge success..........

So you're ready to judge it a "huge success" after being in effect for all of, what, eight months? I'm sure that this program will be the sole exception in history for what you (correctly) acknowledged earlier: Social programs are failures.

Your unqualified support certainly wouldn't have anything to do with the fact that the guys who passed it have R's next to their names... :2wave:
