Do you speed?

Re: Do you speed?

I feel like "speed" is not always a form if whether or not, but when and by how much.

Re: Do you speed?

Do you speed?

I used to speed a lot. A policeman picked me up somewhere in the Western deserts, when I was zooming along at 120 miles an hour. He was rather a nice person and we chatted in the sun about how it is to drive fast in Germany, which he would very happily have tried out. IT seems, he had never driven 150 miles an hour before. Anyway he gave me no fine, but a warning and told me I shouldn't do it in the US any more. I thought he was a fine trooper.

In Romania the police stopped me for being maybe 60 km too fast. They showed me the video and told me how forbidden it was. As I was a foreigner they said they would let me go without a fine, though. I was stopped three times on my way from Bucharest to Constanta and it was the same spiel every time and the police were really nice and fun every time. But each stop cost me 3/4s of an hour. As nice as the chats were, it just was not worth the speed.

But I no longer really feel a need to drive above the limit and like to cruise without hassle.

Re: Do you speed?

I try to keep up with traffic on California freeways.
So, yes, I speed regularly. Stick to the speed limit, and you're likely go get run over.

Re: Do you speed?

Do you speed?

It's not a matter of how often, it's a matter of where. Residential streets, hell no I don't speed. 6 lane 40+/mph limited access roads without direct residential access, usually. Highway/freeway, most certainly or I'd be a huge annoyance to the rest of the drivers.

Re: Do you speed?

"Occasionally, but not intentionally."

As others are saying it usually has more to do with the flow of traffic than some desire of mine to go quicker than the speed limit. Most of the secondary roads are fine, but any of the major roads and Interstates that run through this area pretty much demand going 10 or 15 over. There are spots on I75, I85, and GA400 where the normal flow of traffic outside of congestion times is 20 or 25 over the limit else the other drivers will let you know you are slowing them down. For a while there GA400 had the nickname "Georgia Autobahn."

Re: Do you speed?

I never speed in residential areas. But on highways and interstates? Absolutely. I will stay with the flow of traffic and if they are doing 80 in a 65 I am doing 80 in a 65.

If it is on the interstate and there is no traffic I set my cruise control to 6 miles over the limit. I have never been stopped for speeding by that much on the interstate.

Re: Do you speed?

Yea, speed limits aren't designed well for all roads/conditions, etc.
They're suggestions mostly or they should be.

Speed limits are based, usually, on the category of road, and are thus often arbitrary. Newer road, older road, hills, flat, curvy, straight, doesn't matter. If the guideline calls for 55 mph, then 55 mph it is, even if 65 mph would be perfectly fine.

The road I travel on to and from work, is approximately 30 miles long.
One part has a 65 limit, the other has a 55 limit, even though conditions are the same.
Only difference is that it's a different county.

****ing stupid.

Sounds similar to my commute. Half is a two-lane highway, 55 mph. The other half is a divided four-lane highway, 65 mph. (Same highway) The two-lane portion is straight as an arrow and flat and well-maintained. There are times I'm out there virtually alone, cruise set to 61/62 (I'm not getting a ticket just for principle), and it's mind-numbingly boring. I could easily do 65 and be safe, and probably even 75*.

*- Which would mean the cruise being 72 or 82,

Re: Do you speed?

It's roughly 4 miles from my house to my office. The trip usually takes me 10 minutes and the speed limit is 40mph the whole way. If I did my math right that's an average of 24mph. I could drive 75mph between traffic lights and still not average the speed limit.

Moderator's Warning:
I've waited to see if this thread was going to turn political. It's not. So moving this to a more appropriate location. Only politically based polls are allowed in the poll section.

Re: Do you speed?

I always speed. I probably wouldn't if I kept getting tickets though. I get a lot of warnings during long trips, but I don't care about warnings.

Re: Do you speed?

It depends.

usually 5-8 over if it's 25-35.

usually 70ish-75 on a 55, and 75-80 on 65. But on highways, the main rule is to not be the fastest car in the vicinity. I live in MA and insurance is expensive here. Getting there a few minutes faster isn't worth the thousands of dollars over a couple years in premium increases that a ticket can easily represent.

There is a street in Washington State, just north of Seattle. One side of the road has a 25 mph speed limit, while the other side has a 30 mph limit. The reason? Half of the road is in Lynnwood, the other in Edmonds.

You can't make that stuff up. No one would believe it, but it's true.

Re: Do you speed?

Depends on the road, residential areas being an absolute no-no and also even schools in the countryside (bit outside residencia), the latter usually sign-posted (or should be).

Road and traffic conditions needed to fit so a limit that seemed absurd I'd then be blind to.

I did get a heavy fine in France once though not on grounds of (in the words of the flic) speeding but of flying too low.

Kept me reigned in all the way to Germany but once there I really kicked in the after burner again.

I don't generally speed now that I'm retired, there's no more hurry as it used to be in the rat race.

Who doesn't ?

Well apparently this truck i was stuck behind going 30 in a 45 this afternoon...

Parking lot: 15mph
Residential: 25mph
Freeway/highway/some expressway: 10mph over the speed limit
All others: 5mph over the speed limit

Sticking with these rules, i have yet to receive a ticket.

If you read threads about speed enforcement cameras people come out of the woodwork to claim they never speed.

i don't sped if I can help it. i actually hate speed. And not to mention, when you speed, you're putting lives in danger.

I prefer going on back roads to where i can take my leisurly time. plus i like exploring things as well.

you can't explore when you're speeding.

Well, if everyone on a highway is going 75, but you're the one guy going 55, you're actually the one putting lives in danger. It's speed differentials that create the most risk.

That's true, but try telling that to the cop who stopped you for 75 in a 55. The "everyone else does it" argument isn't going to get you anywhere.
