I am 35 and I am one of the last people here in Austria to have received the traditional iconic pink paper driving license in 2005.

One or two years later, all the kids got the bank-card-style licenses ...

Plastic card with holograms and other supposedly unforgeable features.

Been an ID card ever since I started driving in the early 90's. Only paper was 'temporary' license for a short time before given a true license.

I have always had a card style license since I started driving in the 90s. I am hoping that may state will be an early adopter of allowing you to store them in Apple and Google Wallet.

I TOTALLY forgot that Austria has a smartphone app version for IDs such as the driving license, since last year.

People can get the ID Austria app and show police officers their licenses on their phone, tablet etc.

I don't use that yet.

Hmm... must be an Austria thing. I got my first DL in the '60's - my "learner's permit" was paper, but my official DLs afterwards have always been card.

...which reminds me - I need to get mine renewed. Gak.

Pennsylvania in the early 1970s was a paper “card.”

Folded over to fit in the wallet.

I remember my first license here in Maryland in 1971. It was pink cardboard with an outline of the state, and the age, weight, hair and eye color, sex(uh-oh!) and race typed onto it. It was very easy forge. My fake license made me old enough to drink, however, if you looked closely at it, I had blonde eyes and blue hair...... lol

what is this drivers license you speak of, and why should i want one?

I was looking over the PA example in the above post, to see what physical characteristics were listed, none. But there is a glaring error on the document.

Yeah, the DOB looked a little off. lol It didn't look like ours here in Md. at all. It looked a lot more detailed though.

Mine have always been plastic cards with my face on them. I had to turn in the first few of them when I got new ones, or I would have collected them all.

Giving off a Marty McFly vibe!

In the US, I think you have to renew your driving license every 5 or 10 years, right ?

Here in Austria, the license is valid forever.

Are there any states in the US where you don't have to renew it ?

Can go either 4 or 8 years now in my state(Ohio) and can renew online if desired, until 65, then must go every 4 in person for eye test. Used to have to do it every 4 at any age no matter what.

No eye exam there, even when on in the years?.. Sounds troubling.. Bunch of older folks saying "I can see just fine!"
That was my Mom until she had to go last year for renewal. Failed miserably. Off for glasses!
