Did Bill Gates Release Malaria Mosquitoes Into Tech Audience?

'There is no reason only poor people should be infected.'

Stunt: Bill Gates releases the mosquitos. The philanthropist has campaigned to help
the poorest countries in the world

Microsoft founder turned philanthropist Bill Gates released a glass full of mosquitoes at an elite technology conference to make a point about the deadly disease malaria.

'Malaria is spread by mosquitoes,' Gates said while opening a jar on stage at the Technology, Entertainment, Design Conference in Monterey, California — a gathering known to attract technology kings, politicians, and Hollywood stars.

'I brought some. Here I'll let them roam around. There is no reason only poor people should be infected.'

First reported on social networking site Twitter, Facebook's Senior Platform Manager Dave Morin blogged, 'Bill Gates just released mosquitoes into the audience at TED.'

Gates then waited a minute or so before assuring the audience the freed insects were malaria-free.

The unusual presentation on malaria prevention was confirmed by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation's media office. A spokesman said the insects released were not carrying malaria.

Gates retired as head of Microsoft last year to focus more on his foundation. One of its key projects is ending malaria and it has spent millions on fighting the disease.

The philanthropist has been pushing to reduce malaria deaths through the nonprofit.

In September, Gates announced that the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation would provide $168.7 million to the PATH Malaria Vaccine Initiative to help develop a vaccine for the deadly disease.

Even though they weren't deadly malaria carrying mosquitoes (how does he really know?) any concentration of mosquitoes is reason for worry.

Maybe these skeeters were bred in a lab. Maybe they were irradiated to be neutered and unable to reproduce. Maybe these were only males, which (supposedly) do not bite humans.

Only Bill knows and it seems he's slowly inching closer to the dividing line between sanity and not.

As Cyndi Lauper sang, "money changes everything."

 we agree on something!!!!

I bet Bill Gates was 100% sure that they were not carrying Malaria. He understands how to avoid lawsuits. As a fellow Philanthropist I believe it is my duty to question....

Gates, w.t.f man? You don't have to prove to the T.E.D audience anything. They are educated, liberal, persons. If you want to prove the point of Malaria, then head over to some large World Economic Forum and release them there. You'd be the liberator I always knew you'd be.

What wasn't mentioned in the article is that the next installment of Windows injects AIDs into your eyes whenever you look at the Desktop; now not only do Africans have to suffer from Aids (couldn't be much worse than Vista haha)

They didnt contain malaria and he made a point of stating that fact.

Theres loads of mosquitos in Cyprus during the summer, i get eaten alive by them, never caught malaria though. You only really get malaria carrying mosquitos in places like Africa. Most mosquitos dont carry malaria, like most dogs dont have rabies, just so you know.

What the **** are you talking about? There is no risk involved. It was fewer mosquitos than I see on an average night when I'm sitting on the porch.

I thought this was great - he's trying to make a point to these people that this **** isn't just something you should pretend to care about. This is real life.

How about Windows 7 injecting Aids into your eyes?

What do you say about that one? Doesn't seem like such a nice person anymore now does he? hahaha

I kid.

you're saying elitests are liberals? Or that these liberals are elitests? ;)

I'm just saying that the T.E.D Conference typically has more liberals attend than non-liberals.
Then I would say most of them certainly aren't educated! :doh
