The good news is that if DeSantis tries to engage in civil war, such a small force would get rolled over in about a day.
And...the hyperbole begins.

DeSantis:

DeSantis pitched the idea Thursday as a way to further support the Florida National Guard during emergencies, like hurricanes. The Florida National Guard has also played a vital role during the pandemic in administering Covid-19 tests and distributing vaccines.

"Reestablishing the Florida State Guard will allow civilians from all over the state to be trained in the best emergency response techniques and have the ability to mobilize very, very quickly,"

The OP:

CIVIL WAR!!!

In the article:

"No Governor should have his own handpicked secret police."

"vigilante militia"

Obviously DeSantis isn't going to publicly say what it's really for.

I wonder how many of the people responding know that this is already a 'thing' and is active in 24 states, including California, New York, Maryland, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and other traditionally blue states.

“Civilian military force” is an oxymoron just sayin.

If they’re not funded by the Feds and only doing disaster relief I fail to see what the problem is.
So do you see the active New York State Guard as a threat? Or the California State Guard.

Seriously...before posting your comment did you have ANY idea that 24 states already have what DeSantis is promoting? Or that many states still have them but they are inactive, while the governors of those states have the right and ability to call to activation by a simple executive order?

What is the upper age limit?

Geezers with guns, what could go wrong?

;)

"it would become the 23rd active state guard in the country, DeSantis' office said in a press release, joining California, Texas and New York."

Im ok with it. One step closer to independence.

What time did you get the DC on January 6th?

I hear thrre are warehouses packed full of uparmored mobility scooters stored in FL in anticipation of the new force.

I can't speak for other states, but the Texas State Guard is not armed and not authorized to carry firearms...

I'm with Mycroft on this one.
States have the power to create defense forces separate from the national guard, though not all of them use it. If Florida moves ahead with DeSantis' plan to reestablish the civilian force, it would become the 23rd active state guard in the country, DeSantis' office said in a press release, joining California, Texas and New York.
Article is kinda shitty. Now, do I want DeSantis specifically to have control of a state guard? Not really. But it's hardly unprecedented.

I would think this makes a lot of sense with how many hurricanes, etc hit FL. Gives him more resources to deploy for state of emergencies, etc

Or he could continue to call upon Team Rubicon....

State National Guards can also be Federalized and are then under the command of the Pentagon.

Just sayin'.

These are not national guard units... They get NO access to any military assets or training... Think of them as grown up Boy Scouts...

Including the wearing of brown shirts?

The real question is why now? IMO he's disappointed that he hasn't been in the national news for a few days, he needs to stir some things up.

so extremist civilian militias?
