Actually it’s more nuanced than that.

Prior to the Reagan amnesty migrant workers went home in the off season and came back the following year. But part of the amnesty was slamming the borders closed. So they started staying.

And here we are. Unintended consequences and all that.

The GOP talks out both sides of its neck on this subject. They have never seriously gone after those who employ illegals. Because those are GOP voters and donors for the most part. They have always known exactly where they are. They just don’t do anything about it.

And another element is that absent immigrants illegal and legal we would be heading where Japan is. Population decline. 1.6 kids per couple. Real estate has tanked. Homes sitting empty all over the country.

It’s all just one of those situations where sound bites don’t give an accurate picture. Propaganda works on emotions. Details aren’t really relevant.
