Dempsey: US Ground Combat Troops Possible in Islamic State Fight

Did you mean "can't?" The initial response to 9/11 is I believe, the best example of how we can defeat these types of forces without the application of US Ground Forces. And I'd like to think that the Iraqi Army at this point is just as effective (and hopefully more) than the Northern Alliance was in 2001.

It got the job done; it pushed the Taliban and their forces out of Kabul and Afghanistan, forcing them to operate from the shadows and from the other side of the Pakistan border. They certainly had their flaws, (Tora Bora comes to mind) but they were effective in taking the ground. Keeping it, I'll grant you, but then again, we've not had that much success either.

They were also getting assistance from our SOF prior to the Afghan War.
