Mary Lands campaigned on Abortion Rights and IVF. One of many I expect. Good to see this.

For six years now, the Democrats have out performed the polls. Fundamentally, what the right is peddling, not enough people are buying.

Said it before and I'll say it again: the polls are flawed. They overrepresent older demographics when voters are getting younger and younger.

But I hope our MAGA Republican friends continue to hyper-focus on polling data as if they're actual votes. Just makes beating them in elections all the sweeter.

I like the way that you think.

The right needs to keep pushing that they know what's best for women.
When will the right start screaming 'Rigged election?" and demand a recount. Is Lindell and his shitty pillows coming to town to claim the voting machines are compromised and flip votes to Democrats?

I thought it was illegal for a Democrat to win in Alabama? They'll probably get right on fixing that now that this TRAGEDY has occurred. Oh the horror!

Was thrilled to see this. One of her campaign ads was of a woman who had to travel 10 hours to get an abortion over a fetus with fatal abnormalities. Lands said, paraphrasing, “I had a similar situation when I was young. I had more rights 50 years ago than she has today.”

We've got to stop getting excited over special elections where 5000 people vote and the total turnout is about 1/3 of what you are going to get during the general election.

it is no more an indicator than an individual poll of 1000 people.

These special election victories for Democrats are very unusual, historically speaking. Until recently, Democratic voters have been inert in off-Presidential elections.

The winner last night got over 2000 fewer votes than she did when she lost in 2022.

These issues may or may not play out in the Presedential race, I think they will, but they are going to play out big time down ballot.

It's worth noting that the Republican, Teddy Powell, was not some kind of wild-eyed MAGA candidate who was doomed from the start in a swing district.
He's a relatively moderate, technocratic guy.
But the Democrat, Marilyn Lands, ran exclusively on IVF and reproductive rights and just killed him.

But you're comparing a November campaign to a special election campaign. Special elections almost always have fewer voters.

This is a sign that people are motivated to vote Blue, largely because of the abortion issue and the threat of authoritarianism within the GOP. I understand being skeptical but I think there is reason to have at least some optimism from this result.

Comments like this make me wonder who you really support.

Special election outcomes like this generate energy and momentum. Democrats around the country will be promoting this outcome as an example of how political activism (which includes voting in special elections) can change our lives for the better.

Yes, that is my point.

It is dumb to compare a special election to a presidential election.

Being over confident isn't going to help Biden win in November.

A state house seat. I think the House is 75 republican, 38 democrat. Still a very long way to go to tip the balance in the State House.

I agree. Teddy Powell should have won because his campaign focused on broader issues that indicated he clearly wasn't some MAGA loyalist lunatic. But his ads really didn't talk about the issues his campaign alleged him to be for, i.e., economic development, infrastructure, improving allocating state tax dollars across a wider breathe of state-sponsored programs (non-specific), and support for public education. Instead, his ads came across as him being inept. Besides that, he didn't start running TV ads until about a month ago.

He probably would have received much more support had voters truly known he was a moderate, non-MAGA Republican. But notice even among the issues Powell supports, being pro-abortion/woman's rights wasn't one of them. So, his lack of pitching himself as being more capable on top of not talking up the issues he supports and being aloft on the abortion equation cost him.

I'm a registered Republican. I get asked all the time why I don't vote for democrat candidates. I was accused by a friend who is a democrat of not voting for Obama because he is black. I told him what I tell everyone who asks. I disagree with many of the democrat parties basic stances on policies that mean something to me. He asked what those were and I rattled off a list. He apologized, said he didn't agree, but could see I had reasons for my vote. Duh...............
This is the entire problem with democrats, particularly the more left they are. If you don't agree with their position, you are “racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic and Islamophobic”, as per Hillary Clinton. You aren't allowed to simply have other positions based on your beliefs.

The win wasn't so much a "flip" as it was a "Flying Mare followed by a Full Body Slam". I will provide explanation for those who aren't members of "Claque Failed Casino Operator", but all true fans of pro-wrestling know exactly what I mean.
