Many people wonder what it would be like to live under democratic socialism, where the community, (and not some greedy capitalist) determines what will be produced.

Well, we have some democratic socialism right here in the good ol usa. Many left wing cities allow the community to decide on what may be built. If a developer wants to build an apartment building, the community has the power to prevent him from doing so.

This sounds good, but is it? No. We forget that the community is full of people who are just as greedy and self-interested as any capitalist. Nimbys know that preventing new housing from being built props up the price of their own homes, and they act accordingly.

Now imagine the entire economy being run like this.

NIMBYs are socialist, according to you.

Lol. NIMBY's aren't new nor are they socialist. One guy stopped the construction of a Kimpton Hotel. It's still on pause. One idiot with an old house. A house worth millions.

Beavor also claimed that he was approached by a real estate professional on behalf of the Frisch house, saying that CAI could buy the property for $3 million. The move makes him question the reason behind the opposition to the sewer realignment, Beavor said.

Speth pushed back against the allegation that he was holding out in order to attract a purchase offer, saying he never gave anyone authority to approach Beavor about buying the house.

“The house is not for sale and has not been put up for sale,” Speth said. “I haven’t talked to a realtor so whatever (Beavor is) saying, he can just shove it.”

 Democratic socialist millionaire.

You will get blow-back for using the term socialism to describe government control of private property use (commonly called zoning restrictions).

It's called zoning. As in, no, you can't **** up a neighbourhood full of single family houses by building a high-rise condo project. And no, you can't build your steel fab shop beside that extended care facility.
Don't like the community standards? Get out of the community. Go build outside of town.
That's not socialism. You don't know what the word means.

Man…we all just yearn to go back to the time where the capitalists owned and ran everything, right?

You live in the company house, you listen to the rules made by the company “police”, you get paid in those company “schits”, you shop at the company store…

Capitalism is so great! I mean LOOK AT THAT UTOPIA! Who doesn’t aspire to that?

Nope, that's a separate issue of how government restricts the supply of housing. Here is the video timestamped regarding the zoning:

Even hunter-gatherer societies and early agriculture societies had rules around how they “lived” and how their communities were designed and organized.

As well as hierarchies as to who lived where.

To think that rules around how communities are organized is a “government” thing is juvenile and uneducated.

Zoning is merely the growth of that as population centers have evolved and grown.

Capitalism is so great!

Your extremely high standard of living comes from capitalism, it does not come from the state. You live better than 99.9% of all humans who have ever existed, and that is because of capitalism. In just a scant 200 or so years, which is a drop in the bucket time-wise, capitalism has wiped out mass poverty around the globe.

Wait….you think capitalism has only been around 200 years?

😂😂😂😂

Omg that’s hysterical.

and as the granddaughter and great grand daughter of miners, I’d like to disagree.

My ancestors had a really crappy standard of living. Abject poverty in fact. KIDS had to go to work and die in mines - young kids were ideal “Breaker Boys”.

Take a bird with them so you’d know if the air was toxic and maybe be able to get out in time.

Safety standards? LOL. What are those? Workers compensation? Get hurt - your family gets thrown out of the company house so another miner can replace them.

F*ck unbridled capitalism.

Anyone that thinks unbridled capitalism is something to desire is nothing more than a privileged snot - probably that sits around chatting with other privileged snots while enjoying all sorts of liberties and protections offered to them by government.

There's nothing inherently wrong or evil about NIMBY. Their philosophy says due to proximity they are THE primary stakeholders. That's actually more legitimate than the idea of 'sharing the pain' by conveniently dumping it on someone else.

we're about as capitalistic as you can get. we have people getting rich off prisons and the Bible for God's sake.

the real question is how are people getting so conned to think we're not? where are they getting such terrible propaganda?

It’s like they forget that people FOUGHT for government protections against capitalism.

For minimum wages. For labor laws. For protections against the worst aspects of capitalism.

The selective memory and rewriting of history is amazing.

Your extremely high standard of living comes from capitalism

No it doesnt.

The US has a mixed economy not a capitalist or a socialist economy.

Every single successful country has a mixed economy.

There is not one single successful capitalist economy in the world.

Facts matter.

Don't bother, I don't open video links.
Everyone knows that we each are more directly affected by local government than state or federal. And the characters we elect to local government know they are more directly affected by the voters than state or federal legislators. Anyone who thinks that city or municipal governments want to restrict the supply side of the housing market is deluded by developers lobbying in the media.
Never mind that 'Nimby' crap. How many vehicles does a high-rise flood the streets of a neighbourhood with? How many kids into the school on the corner?
This isn't socialism, it's called urban planning, and you want to leave it in the hands of developers?
I get it, the city planners are hampered by having university educations on the subject and you lot think education is leftist indoctrination. Developers are probably educated also and it's the kind of 'common sense' education you lot can understand but trust me, for the sake of the well-being of the whole city someone needs to put limits on those eager, grasping bastards.

The South pre 1/1/1863 had the purest form of capitalism.

Who do you think protects property rights?

Oh no, aociswundumho has exposed the NIMBY + leftist alliance!
