Here's a newsflash, Congressional elections are local elections. People who sway those elections, the independents, don't generally care about party identification, thats why they are called independents. A congressmen is more concerned with what his voters have to say as opposed to what Dems and Independents in other districts may think.

If those Dems and Indies don't like Obama or if the candidate thinks he's better off distancing himself, and by the way there's a difference between distancing and outright disassociating, then they will act that way to get elected.
Plenty of Reps for example ran against Bush in 2006 and 2008 when he was unpopular for the same reason, however as we are now seeing just TWO years later even though they were toast then they are bouncing back now.

So in the end this story could be from any congressional election year, and in the end its just as meaningless because in two/six years people on them forum will talking about Reps running against the Republican President. :/

This statistic may be true but it doesn't mean much as the vast majority of votes in the Congress are inconsequential and uncontroversial (like naming post offices or thanking sports teams). If he's try to look bipartisan what is important in not his overall vote total (unless its in the mid-80s or higher), but how he voted on major issues like healthcare or the stimulus.

I'd wager he's in the 37% with those ;)
