WASHINGTON — Veterans Affairs Secretary David Shulkin is being replaced, President Trump tweeted Wednesday, ending weeks of speculation and uncertainty about his fate.

He had been locked for months in a power struggle with a group of Trump political appointees among his senior staff who wanted him out. His ouster suggests they won the president over in the end, convincing Trump that the 58-year-old former hospital executive and Obama appointee was the wrong fit to lead the agency and too moderate.

Apparently Shulkin was supported by many Veterans groups.
Some Repubs are pushing for privatization of certain aspects of VA. Shulkin was not on board with this

Another one bites the dust...

Privatization will result in disabled vets getting a voucher for two thousand bucks, a kick in the teeth and a great big
"THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE"
followed by a quietly muttered, "Now get the **** out of here."

Millions of veterans have lifetime disabilities and illnesses which are not profitable to the private sector, and the private sector is much more interested in symptom management rather than cures, wellness, prevention and rehabilitation.
Most disabled veterans will rather naturally wind up as cases which are considered a nuisance by profit driven private practice.

Privatization of the VA is perhaps the most mean-spirited and sick minded scam that will be perpetrated upon our brave soldiers in the history of this nation, and I hope and pray that millions will show up in Washington to voice their anger.

It is likely my wife will be one of them, she swore that would be her mission, even if it ultimately kills her.
The VA has saved her life seven times. Private practice had her going round the mulberry bush for six years with NO DIAGNOSIS and NO treatment.
She would possibly still be able to walk today had they taken better care of her prior to her getting accepted by the VA.

I have no idea why anybody would want to serve today.

Why would this Cretin change. A despicable man

And his supporters eat it up. They love watching grown men who dedicated their entire lives to the service of this country get treated like garbage men who robbed some little old lady's stash of flowers.

Wait til they cut pensions for injured/disabled Vets. They did that in the UK and Canada followed suit.
As an injured Vet, it sucks.

Trump, Ryan, McConnell et al have been on board with pension cuts forever, and under Trump the campaign has been supercharged.
Military Times shot off several angry columns about it in January and February.

I wonder if he had the decency and balls to fire him to his face, unlike what he did to others.
doesn't appear so

....In the interim, Hon. Robert Wilkie of DOD will serve as Acting Secretary. I am thankful for Dr. David Shulkin’s service to our country and to our GREAT VETERANS!

Yes they are in a rush to have 2 classes - the rich and those that ain't. Privatization of portions of VA, to Social Security and Medicaid cuts.

I have no idea why anybody would want to serve today.

Because they love their country and value freedom and liberty. The same reason Americans have served since 1775.

curiously, Admiral Jackson, like shulkin, was originally an Obama appointee

shulkin was reportedly trying to get the contract signed to digitize the VA medical system documents. he hoped that would be his legacy accomplishment. i don't believe that happened

regarding privatizing VA assistance; the VA locations are often remote to the veteran needing medical help. and those veterans often need a ride to acquire that help from the distant VA location. i could support a system that allowed the veteran to choose for him/herself whether to seek treatment directly from the VA (which might be superior assistance) or to instead opt for private treatment from a local medical provider. in every instance, that choice - to sacrifice quality for convenience - should only be able to be made by the veteran seeking medical help

The Trump right wing agenda for the VA is to privatize much of its services. While Shulkin was going in that direction, it was not as fast or as dramatic enough for Trump and the right wing. Plus he was a DEM holdover and his days were numbered.

He was involved in unethical actions. Should he not be fired?

I was aware of those, posted a thread on it. Yes fired, but not by tweet, That said problems that some in the WH, and the so called Veteran experts on Fox & Friends are for privatization of VA services which would be a disaster.

Others in Cabinet should also be turfed - Zinke who traveled 1st class with security ( security also travelled 1st class) to Greece, Pruitt due to security concerns, and the guy that blames his wife for the expensive table.

Greetings, tres. :2wave:

What did this guy do wrong, according to Trump?

In an era of absolute waste and incompetancy in the VA there needs to be a zero tolerance policy for bull**** by VA managers.

But he came under fire after he took his wife on a government-paid trip to Europe last year that appeared to involve more tourism than work. He also was the focus of an inspector general inquiry into whether he used his security detail to perform personal errands.

Embattled Veterans Affairs Secretary David Shulkin fired in latest White House shake-up

Agree on both the tweeting and privatization and the others in Cabinet. Heck....I agree with your whole post!

Yes, but he as with so many in Trump's cabinet and administration he shouldn't have been hired. Vets are damned tired of Washington and Trump ducking around with the VA. The system remains in a constant state of flux. Good people work for the VA but their is no commitment from the WH and the system sputters and farts and leadership is anything but constant.

We raised our right hands and took an oath and made a promise. We were/are held to higher standards that to the President, no matter who the President may be. Veterans know what is needed at the VA. Listen to veteran's organizations they'll are shy. Trump made commitments, promises to veterans but instead the VA continues to be passed around and nothing much gets done.

I wanted to say that makes me sad, but that would be a lie. It makes me angry as hell.

This is not the first time I have heard tragic stories like this nor the first time the private sector insurance scheme failed an American soldier. I had a friend I met on line in a quit smoking forum who was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes more than a year before I was. I was in front of a specialist and a list of dieticians in three days. She saw her first specialist three months after that and by then too much tissue damage had been done. She passed away a few months later.

Our system, the one Americans laugh at, lie about and are so **** scared of, that system would have saved her. Both she and her loving husband were lifers in the Air Force, spent years posted over seas, but when the time came she needed one specialist to prescribe the right medication that system failed. And no one raised a voice.

We aren't much better sometimes in the way we treat our vets, they have a real complaint about PTSD after Kandahar and their issues are not being addressed. there are two differences, 1 - we don't start wars and 2 - their issues WILL be addressed. It may take awhile, but here our politicians have learned to fear us. Just ask Stephen Harper.

Interestingly, Our young Mr. Trudeau has taken on the Pope and the Roman Church..

Trudeau disappointed by Pope'''s decision not to apologize for residential schools | CBC News

He's got some balls I'd say. Trudeau that is. It's cowardice to do nothing

BTW, our shame is residential schools, it is the slavery issue of Canada where children were taken from their homes and made to attend orphanage like schools, where they were systematically beaten, raped, tortured as their goal was to "beat the Indian out of the Indian" That contract was let to the Roman and Anglican churches.

Somebody write this down and record the date. Apdst and I finally agree on something.
