Critics say plan to cut Coast Guard personnel will harm readiness for crises

washingtonpost.com

Three months before the massive BP oil spill erupted in the Gulf of Mexico, the Obama administration proposed downsizing the Coast Guard national coordination center for oil spill responses, prompting its senior officers to warn that the agency's readiness for catastrophic events would be weakened.

That proposal is feeding a mounting debate over whether the federal government is able to regulate deep-sea oil extraction. Defense analysts and retired agency leaders question whether the Coast Guard -- which shares oversight of offshore drilling with the Interior Department's Minerals Management Service -- has the expertise and resources to keep pace with industry advances.

Accidents happen, "but what you're seeing here is the government is not properly set up to deal with this kind of issue," said Robbin Laird, a defense consultant who has worked on Coast Guard issues. "The idea that you would even think about getting rid of catastrophic environmental spill equipment or expertise at the Department of Homeland Security, are you kidding me?"

So, Obama wanted to cut the very people who we needed the most? Am I missing something?

Well, we're going to have to find the funding from somewhere. Who would you like to tax in order to come up with the revenue to keep the Coast Guard in operation?

No, I would like to cut the bajillions in socialist crap.
Then we could fund anything national security-wise.

Protecting the nation is Job#1, and it is permitted by our Constitution.

BUT... such behavior is consistent with Obama's blatant disregard for our national security.

You mean like how he hasn't yet withdrawn troops in Afghanistan and Iraq and end those wars? Or that he hasn't called for the repeal of the PATRIOT Act yet? Is that how he's showing blatant disregard for our national security?

But you're absolutely right. Let's end all the socialist government spending going on first. Let's put an end to no-bid contracts and government subsidies to agricultural goods so they can compete in the free market. That sounds like a good start to me.

Obama would most likely suggest that those States having a Coastline should be more willing to pay more to have those Coastlines protected than States that did not have a coastline.

I seem to recall him having thought of this type of idiocy before, when he suggested that Service men and Women should purchase their own Insurance as they were fulfilling their own desire in fighting for the US.
Thankfully someone pursuaded this ignoramus that that idea was not the briightest he could come up with.

Got to disagree with you there..... it probably was the brightest idea he could come up with.

Why is taxing the only means ? Is there nothing in the Federal budget you can think of that can be reduced?

Personally? Yes. We can legalize drugs and prostitution, which will reduce the need to pay for the enforcement, trial, and incarceration of those involved in those crimes, thus lowering our need to pay for them. That would drop a couple thousand million from the budget, and raise revenue from taxes on it.

But I also know that that's not going to happen any time soon.

How 'bout we don't spend trillions of dollars on deer under passes and turtel tunnels? Cutting the Federal government's number one source of non-tax revenue surely isn't going to help things.

You got a link to where we're spending trillions of dollars on deer under passes and turtel tunnels? Because, for one thing, I don't think we've spent a trillion dollars on those, and for another thing, I think the proliferation of no-bid contracts have cost the U.S. government more than what we actually have spent on deer under passes and turtel tunnels.

Off the top of my head, I could think of over a dozen things that should be cut LONG before the Coast Guard should be. I have no issue cutting back on *some* military spending (in a smart way), but NOT the Coast Guard. We need them more than anything. They're the ones that are supposed to be there in times of crisis. Why the **** would we cut something so beneficial and necessary? Now, if they wanted to redirect that funding to STATE Coast Guard-like organizations, I'd have no issue with that either. I have no issue with each state being responsible for their own **** in that way. But just cutting funding flat out? ****ing retarded.

I have no problems in theory cutting funding to the coast guard.

I do have issues though when repeatedly "cuts" are not happening across the board or targetting "wasteful" programs but seemed to specifically and routinely be aimed at portions of government that Obama and/or Demcrats and liberals dislike or have a disdain for the need of them.

Wild thought...cut every government program's and agencies budget by 1% and then let additional cuts be made beyond that baseline, but the percentage different in cuts can't be more than 3%. The only other option allowable would be to entirely scrap or redesign a program or agency. That way sure, if a President wants to cut military spending that's fine...but they can't cut that and just leave everything else. Likewise, they want to drastically cut spending on national parks? Sure, but you can't just cut that. Stop picking and choosing where we're going to "Cut" the budget for political reasons and cut the governments budget as a whole. If something is so "wasteful" or useless or inefficient scrap it completely and if needed start over.

You get that the problem is NOT with no bid contracts but with the OVERSIGHT of those contracts...right?

I think we should cut spending across the board as well. I am all for cutting limits to coast guard, and guess what I am someone who lives on the coast line. I also am for cutting some funding to useless programs, and social security, and I am on welfare for my disability. I am also willing to pay a little bit more in my taxes as well for programs like this type of thing. I feel it is my civic duty to pay my taxes to help the government to pay of the debt that we have.

Come on now Rev, one of the ways people have (rightfully in my mind) pointed out Obama's lack of tax increase BS is just that is pointing out there's far more taxes than simply income tax.

Sales Tax, Taxes on utilities, taxes on corporations which are then essentially passed down onto us, taxes on gas, and on and on. We can't point those things out with Obama when its beneficial then act like we can't think of any tax but income tax later on ;)

Other examples than what Zyphlin pointed out are taxation of capital gains, taxation of retirement pensions and social security contributions ect, inheritance taxes, taxation of gifts, taxation of LLCs, partnerships which make higher prices come down too us. This is basic tax law in the states Rev, and for more information about the Taxes I have to pay as a consumer can be found here

And hugs Rev. I love yah too
