Covid warning as ANOTHER new variant discovered in France...

People are going to say that this is the boy crying wolf, forgetting (or perhaps never knowing) how that particular parable ends.

If the worst virus ever wanted to do the most destruction, it would wait til right after the last most publicized and least destructive virus.

All that said, the fact that there’s a new variant is actually meaningless. What made omicron significant isn’t that it was a new variant (there’s new variants all the time); it’s that it had unique properties. In omicron’s case the properties were increased transmissibility and immunity evasion. Nothing is known about this new variant or whether it contains unique properties, therefore there’s no (known) reason for alarm.

Gotta love the source for this story. The headline:

“Covid warning as ANOTHER new variant discovered in France – scientists sound alarm”

And in the body of the article itself:

“There are currently no further details on the variant, but there is no need to be alarmed yet. There are scores of new variants discovered all the time, but it does not necessarily mean they will be more dangerous than Delta or Alpha.”

But hey, they got my click, and that’s the thing that matters here, right?

We know very little yet about this new discovery, correct. There is nothing meaningless about this variant until we have been told more. If it's nothing, you can call it whatever you want. Until then it remains a concern, just as all the other variants have initially been.

As the article itself says that there’s no need to be alarmed. You know, right after saying in the headline that scientists were sounding the alarm. The source is sensationalist bait-click garbage, and frankly I’m a little surprised you would use this as your source for starting a new thread. You should be more discriminating in the future.

There was no need to be alarmed over Covid Alpha either, as your ex-President was eager to emphasise...

shorter infections, more quarantining and less transmissions = fewer variants

now. watch a bunch of people argue.

Yeah, I saw that too and chuckled.

Variants are a factor of caseload. Most of the time they're less harmless. Sometimes not so much. And this virus mutates frequently, and their effects take a while to gauge.

So you treat every one of them like they're serious.

Snakestretcher, does the article match the headline?

“Seriously” ≠ “alarm.” This article wasn’t intended to be helpful, but to get clicks. Sure, the headline could have said “New variant found; no reason for alarm yet,” but how many people would have clicked on that?

British tabloids really are the ****ing worst.

At the time he said it not much was known and as the POTUS he had an obligation to maintain calm. It could be said that's why Faucet lied about masks; to prevent a public panic rush on PPE.

Good points, thanks. I assumed there would be different variants popping up, but I'm not in a panic over it. Even if one spreads more easily and is less affected by the vaccines, if the symptoms are milder that is somewhat comforting. I think if we all get vaccinated and boosted, we'll get through this and be able to deal with this virus. But, we all have to get vaccinated, even those in red states and counties....united we can fight it better. Glad I didn't bother to click.

I don't disagree.

What I've been more focused on learning about is the impact the new variants have on initial severe illness; I say initial because we don't fully understand the long term impacts of this disease fully. I personally know someone who has been battling long COVID for months and has just come back to work. There are other interests of course; like reducing transmissibility which would cut down on the growth of all these variants.
