So, another snake oil ruse, "I have covid and can't debate".

There is no way Trump would be able to lie about this and not have it leak.

Of course it would leak, but that's irrelevant to his supporters. Reject unnamed sources, say it's all an MSM conspiracy, blah blah

However, I agree with your broader point that he is not making this up and has no reason to get out of the debates. They are one of his only remaining opportunities to change the race and win a fair-ish election. And if a completely rigged election is already in the bag for him, he has no reason to hide from debates that allow him to blather on and on with cameras rolling, which he loves doing. It is right to question everything a pathological liar says, but in this case a fake illness would make no strategic sense. Also, he never admits personal weakness, even when his proclamations of strength/genius/greatness are comically absurd -- there is simply no way he pretends to personal vulnerability, ever.
