(Reuters) - Former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice polled at the head of a crowded pool of potential candidates to succeed long-time Senator Barbara Boxer, according to a Field Poll released on Wednesday.
The poll showed that when likely California voters were asked whether they would vote for or against 18 prominent possible candidates in 2016, 49 percent of likely California voters said they would be inclined to support Rice, a Republican.

I was quite surprised to see this California Senate poll. I'm not sure if Rice is interested in running for Boxer's seat, but I hope this causes her to consider it.

It would be a huge blow to the Democrat party if they lose a California Senate seat to a Republican, especially to someone the left despises so much.

I wonder if criticism of her, if she runs, will be considered racist and/or misogynistic ?? Somehow I doubt it... that's a one-way street.

I wasn't aware she was even considering it. I think she would be great, but I can't see how a Republican associated with the Bush Administration could stand a chance in California.

Considering 60% of the Latino's polled picked Tony Vilar, a pathetic little hack of a human, I can't imagine Ms. Rice being allowed to run a race based on the issues.

The "poll" is meaningless and likely reflects name recognition over policy or preference. We do not know the percentage of those polled who will actually vote, how many a registered as Democrat or Republican etc.

She has shown zero interest and the common wisdom is she is done with the public spotlight all together.

Possibly, but I found it surprising that she polled so high. You also have to admit that it is surprising that a Republican from the Bush administration polled so highly in California.

I would not be surprised if this poll was from Texas, but California has become a reliable Demo state.

It tells me also that no one on the horizon in either party are getting traction.

I recall a similar event here years ago where a woman was polled high as running for premier. I went out with my camera and did a straw poll, and the results were similar, but less than 10% could say what party she was or what office she had held in the past.

I have dealt with the reporting of polls and the public's true level of knowledge most of my life. What is true is that Gruber is right.

I suspect this has a lot to do with the fact that women tend to be very attractive when they are out of reach. Rice has said repeatedly that politics is out of her life now and as the balanced and rational person that she is, I tend to believe her and take her at her word.

She would, however, be a very good choice. California has suffered under terrible Senate representation for decades and deserves better, as does the Senate and the country.

We could do a lot better. Academics don't appear to be good commanders in chief.

Academics with no real life experience make poor commanders in chief... as we've seen lately.

Her executive experience is impressive.

She would be better suited running as an Independent...she would garner more support and she could not have to answer to the CA GOP when she came out.

So called independents rarely win elections.

She is an impressive woman to be sure. I'd rather see someone with business executive experience in charge, however. Business people understand the management of limited resources and tradeoffs better than academics and government people.

Provost of a major university is the same thing as business executive experience. She's also served on the boards of numerous major corporations.

I think she'd be huge on the bottom half of the ticket. No way she gets the same treatment Palin got.

She previously took herself out of consideration.
