(CNBC) McDonald’s reports largest U.S. same-store sales decline since 2020

You must live in the 'big city'.... ;)
Only Whattaburger and Taco Bell do late night. I'll admit to getting three soft tacos after a night out n about but never the Whatta.... ✌️

Yeah, it's a huge megapolis. It has it's pros & cons. But enough pros, that I've yet to leave - though I did blow-off living in the city proper.

Another negative economic report, with data rivaling that of the Pandemic levels.

It appears same-store McDonalds' sales declined among lower-income customers earlier in the quarter, expanding to middle-income customers declining later in the quarter, indicating the economic slowdown is broadening.

From the article it seems McDonalds is an economic canary of sorts for America's lower & mid-income demographics.

Unfortunately, these are the demographics that are also expected to be hit the hardest with Trump's tariffs.

Given that the higher-income demographic purchases actually increased (but not enough to offset the mid & lower losses), I might argue higher-income consumers may also shifting their spending patterns - going from more expensive dining options to McDonalds.

Also, I've long lamented WI is becoming "Chicago-ized", and now I hope it's not becoming "New York-ized" too! (yourself excepted of course)
I live in a rural area, not too far from Madison.

Under no circumstances would I want to bring “NY/NJ” here. I came here to escape that nonsense.

As for “Chicagoization”, well, yeah we get them here in the summertime. Their money is welcome, but they will always be FIBs to us.

There IS another variable. Across the country, food trucks have absolutely taken off. They have to be taking a bite out of the traditional fast food pie.

Don't kid yourself. There's a ton of Chicagoans & Chicago culture up in Madison. Enough to almost call it a suburb!

Those Italian Beefs and Chicago Style Dogs aren't exactly endemic Wisconsin fare.

But Brats? O.K., now you're talkin'! (y)

(I do give you credit for making a rural move. It's something I toy around a bit with, but never really get serious. And yeah - Madison is one of the coolest small cities around. It's an overlooked sleeper.)

The Chicago Style Dogs are just cultural appropriation. They’re OK but got nothing on Wisconsin Brats.

I do miss Brooklyn style Pizza. The Meatball Parm Heros were to die for.

What's the point in tallow fries? Flavor?
Most importantly it's more healthy with natural fats especially with higher temperatures & cooking but the flavor is better as well.

The seed oil are highly inflammatory and when heated they oxidize which is also harmful.

Eating one large McDonald's fry is the equivalent of 20 cigarettes in regards to 2 specific chemicals

For better or worse, I don't have much concern for healthy eating. Nor am I fan of government trying to force me into its ideas of how I should live.

I don't live dangerously or intentionally hazardously, but I'm going to eat what I like. It's served me well, 'till now.

But I do very much appreciate your response and the heads-up. Thanks.

McDonald's is way too expensive for what you get now. Might as well go to a better option for the price.
Noooo...

This is a negative economic indicator!!!

Or something.

It's weird to watch people argue that more people should eat McDonald's... Just weird.

are people saying more people SHOULD eat at mcdonalds?
or saying that fewer people eating at mcdonalds is a bad indicator for the economy.

those of course are completely different things.

Hint:

For an extra dollar, you can make your Whopper a Double!

--

It then becomes a pretty decent value.
LOL...Whoppers are not a value. I paid $8.50 for a Texas Whopper the other day.

Saw this snippet from an LA outlet...

Whataburger is damn good (for fast food).

Albuquerque has a place called Blake's Lotaburger and they taste similar, but at Blake's you definitely get the green chilis on your burger.

A single (Whopper) here is $5.99, which is about fair in price and no real deal. But another buck makes it a double (6.99), which then puts it at a decent value in relation to the competition.

My point is an extra buck turns a fair value into a decent value. It's well worth the buck.

I'm surprised you paid $8.50 for a Whopper, though. That does strike me as high.

Must depend on the management team. Slow, sloppy burgers poorly wrapped. The one on old Cache Rd never looks very busy... ✌️

That's the thing, I get multiple messages from McDonalds decrease in sales.

Unemployment numbers rising, consumer confidence down, and negative GDP news seems like there's a strong case for consumers pulling back.
Economists are going to analyze it to death but I don’t believe for a moment that anyone is thinking about those things when they’re trying to decide what to eat for lunch. They just have more competitors and an inferior product at that price point.

I’d rather have a double truffle mushroom swiss burger and a side of crispy Brussels sprouts from Smashburger than a bun filled with garbage lettuce and a side of limp potatoes from McDonalds.

I'd opine that someone who prefers truffles on their burger and crispy brussels sprouts for lunch doesn't think like the 'average' fast food patron....
It isn't where the average fast-food patron is wanting to spend their hard-earned dollars, but rather SHOULD they spend that much on a fast-food poor nutrition meal.... ✌️

This is both a bad thing and a good thing.

Bad for sales and fantastic for Americas waistline.

It's not just McDonalds seeing declines or slowing growth. I'm sure a decent amount is people waking up to the fact McDonalds is way over priced. I think there's also a components of people unsure of the future so spending less. Consumer confidence has hit 13 year lows.

Chipotle saw declines same store yoy as well.
